All Saints Day
by dacarrer
Hello,
We will visiting Cannes On November 1, 2009 via cruiseline.
Are most of the sights closed due to All Saints Day?
Can you recommend sights to visit and transportation options (bus) for that day?
Would Grasse and Gourdon be a reasonable trip from Port of Cannes?
Thank you

Public holidays in France are generally no different from ordinary Sundays - ie a restricted service on buses and trains but things still run. Gourdon is a virtual impossibility as a day trip by public transport - you would need to hire a car, which as a cruiseboat stop-off doesn't make any sense.
There is plenty to see in Cannes itself, but an excursion to Grasse for the perfume outlets and general sightseeing is a good option. You can get a train to Grasse from Cannes SNCF, which is a fifteen minute walk from the port.Alternatively you are just a couple of stops on the train from Antibes, which also has a lot to see.

Your crise comany has not chosen a good day to visit Cannes - All Saints Day and a Sunday. Nevertheless I'll try and help. First have a look at cannestouristinformation.co.uk This may give you some ideas. All the official places like museums and art galleries are closed that day. I am not sure about shops - some may be. The law has been changed recently.
A few ideas depending on time available. Walk up the pedestrianised road in the old part of Cannes to the attractive church at the top (which will be open). There you have a splendid view of Cannes. Go inland to Mougins, the favourite village of many artists including Picasso (not very far. Gourdan is much further but worthwhile if just for splendid views and ginger cake.
Restaurants in and outside Cannes may need booking. Lots of families go out at Toussaint (All Saints Day.
Visit on of the largest and most attractive cemeteries on the Mediterranean (no joke). Huge amount of flowers will adorn this place thus Sunday. See Cannestouristinformation.co.uk and check whether you have British relations buried there. If you do you are probably descended from high born ancestors.

Travel Tips for Cannes
Cannes is beautiful by night
by rachel_sun
Here is my favourite part of Cannes in the picture. The little house were very nice. This was my favourite place to go too at night. The beautiful lights sparkled over the water and it was very romantic. The bars were very busy at night even in October. There were people walking around with tans like chocolate and ladies made up with so much make up i thought mine was sparse ;-)
I saw men wearing posh suits and ladies looking like they just walked off the set ofg Dynasty. But most people wore just casual clothes as so did i. I will miss the beautiful port near the old town.

This is the old medieval historical part of Cannes
From the top you can enjoy the sight of Cannes and the Bay and the mountains, called l'Esterel.
I saw my first mummies in the Museum there specialised in mediteranean archeology.
Wander Around #2

One thing that we do in all the places
that we visit, is take some time and just
wander around the side streets with no
destination in mind.
We have found many nice little shops
and places to eat by doing so ....

"my favorite city"
I have visited Cannes 3 times because it is my favorite city by the sea. It´s style, elegance, international reputation, the Croisette as one of the nicest
promenades by the sea, and every place with a little charm. Only tourism
spoils some of its former splendor as the city is flooded by nouveau-riches more and more frequently.
Yet, people have maintained their friendly attitude to tourists. Apart from that, Cannes is one of the few cities at the Riviera with a long sandy beach.
"Le Suquet"
Le Suquet is the lovely old Cannes - the historic part with la Citadelle and
the chapel of Saint Roch on the hill. From here, you can have a great view
above the new city of Cannes.
