Ile Sainte Marguerite
by unexplored
The island is 1km from the mainland and is famed as the place where the enigmatic Man in the Iron Mask - immortalised by Alexandre Dumas in his novel Le Viscomte de Bragelonne(1847) - was held in the late 17th century(see The Man in the Iron Mask travelogue).
The island is crossed by walking trails and paths. It's centrepiece is the Fort Royal, built by Richelieu to defend islands against the Spanish. Today it houses the Musee de la Mer, a museum with exhibits on the fort's history and shipwrecks. On the ground floor are the state prisons and the cell where the mysterious Man in the Iron Mask was incarcerated.
Cars.....

Exotic cars abound: white-haired ladies drive Maseratis for shopping trips, Porsches blow through the streets like pollen, and only the very latest models of Lamborghini and Ferrari attract serious attention. We also saw Mustangs, in fact the picture is showing one for sale or rent and we were tempted to rent it :-)
Also on one morning before going to Iles Ste. Marguerite there was a car show of classic cars.
Beach & Sun / Plage et Soleil

With its Mediterranean climate, Cannes offers near unbroken sunshine and warm temperatures throughout the summer making it ideal for a beach holiday. The city is equipped with three long (though not too wide) beach areas. The main beach is in the centre along boulevard de la Croisette. The second largest beach area is past le Vieux Port opposite Sofitel Hotel. The third is past le Palm Beach at the other end of Cannes (opposite Cap d'Antibes and îles de Lérins). In most of these areas, there are private beaches where one could rent a mattress and an umbrella (and have access to "room service"), or simply head to "la plage publique" with one's own towel and umbrella.

Cannes - the Film Festival... The two names have become linked forever.
Cannes has enormous charm with the "old town" narrow walk ways (even though they are mostly now t-shirt shops) with small cafe's and boutiques.
Europe's finest "exotic" cars are seen as common place motor vehicles. Only the latest and greatest in test mode are even "noticed."
A week after I was there the new Ferrari SuperAmerica was debuted.
Unfortunately, I'm still trying to identiry this vehicle that I heard before I saw and only had time to click off one shot.
But getting back to the film festival. In late May the town truely turns into a canival that caters to the film "elite." Not that they deserve it but because they are there at the right time....
Here, Bill Murry, nods to "his crowd" of photogs. The same was performed to the group on the other side of the carpet which is more than some of the other "actors" did for the press.
