New Year in Mougins/Cannes - what happens?

by Reevo39

I'm going to be visiting Cannes on 31st December to 7th January & staying in Mougins. Can anyone tell me what happens over the New Year in this area please? Is it a major holiday where everything shuts down for 3 days or will I be able to buy food etc from supermarkets on 1st/2nd January.
Also what are the best things to do at this time of year - we have never been to this region before.
Any help would be much appreciated - thank you

New years eve everything should be running fine - in preparation for a great evening. I only know thw the Nice scene but fireworks are up and down the Cote d' azur at midnight are common. Restaurants put on special menus - very very expensive, and usually preooked seats!

New years day virtually everything shuts.down - only the odd little local superette open.

Things creep back to normal slowly but a lot of shops and such will take the oportunity of an extended break

Lets hope for good weather. Last year we spent Newyears day on the beach at Villefranche!

Cheers

Travel Tips for Cannes

Walk along the old and new in Cannes

by Pavlik_NL

Two walks are necessary to get a good impression of Cannes. One should be in the old town, on and around Mont Chevalier and the ruins of the castle of the Lerin-munks. The other goes along the Boulevard de la Croisette and sees the mondain side of cannes, the Cannes of the film stars and the beach life.

Parks and playgrounds

by micajo

A small 'square' on the Le Suquet hill, just below the tower and ramparts, and places to site amidst large oleander bushes and beneath lovely shade trees.

At the west end of "La Croisette", between the Palais des Festivals and the beach, is a shaded grassy park area with playground, including slides and things. You will find a real carousel there, or sometimes an even bigger one out on the esplanade in front of the "Palais".

At the east end of "La Croisette", just before the new Port Canto yacht harbor, is another park and playground. This one also has carnival-type rides for the bigger kids.

Beside the playground at the east end of "La Croisette" is the Jardin Alexandre III, a lovely big flower-garden park.

Casino Croisette

by al_mary

This casino is located inside the
world famous Palais des Festivals.

They open at 10am each day, and
remain open until 5 am.

For the slot players, you have the
fruit machines, 290 of them ....

From 7pm on, it's time for traditional games such as roulette,
and black jack to be played in the Salon des Jeux. For dinner,
try its restaurant, where set menus are available for EUR19.82.

After a little gambling and a nice dinner, dance the night away
in the famous Le Jimmyz club.

Admission is free in the slot machine hall ......

Cannes, the festival, the stars, la croisette....

by laetitiad

Cannes, the festival, the stars, la croisette.... But it's also a place where real people live, even when the film festival is finished !!!
I actually live in a village 5 km from Cannes. I'll give you as well tips on Cannes as on the area which is a great place to visit and to live in.

Except the famous film festival, there are a lot of other events in Cannes all year long. But when there are no events the atmosphere is more of a small province town than anything else : it can be difficult to find a restaurant late in the evening a week day.
