Chateau de Cassis

If you are walking around the pretty port at Cassis you can't fail to notice the castle up on the cliff overlooking the city. The chateau is closed to the public.

There was evidence that the site of the present chateau was occupied as early as the 5th century under the Romans. Over the years fortifications were constructed and dwellings built to house the people that eventually moved back into Cassis town in the 16th century. The castle served a defensive purpose probably until the English attack in 1813, after which it became purely residential. The castle became private property in 1896 and has remained so.

Today it is a very expensive hotel/spa. Put it this way, the view from the chateau must be magnificent.
Price tag for the cheapest room in the chateau is 269 euro a night!

I found it somewhat funny that a hotel that is clearly a luxury choices offers advice on how to get there by public bus!
