The greens and gardens of Grasse

Not in the centre, but more in the outskirts of Grasse, this town of parfume, hides it's parcs and gardens.
To be mentioned should be the Parc communal de la Corniche, which is situated just outside the centre against the hillside. From here a magnificent view that has been added some hight through a belvedere (watch tower).
Another wonderful garden, that also shows the flowers that are used for many parfumes, is the "Jardin de la princesse Pauline". From here you can see over the Esterel-mountains and all the way up to the sea.

at the end of the guided tour of fragonard, you're strategically taken to the perfume store. if you don't want to buy anything, that's fine; you can, however, ask to smell samples of their perfumes and it's fun. try to decifer each essence in one perfume.

the room is filled with strong smells, so if you're sensitive to that kind of thing, i wouldn't recommend staying that long.

my dog did not enjoy this room, and much preferred the doggy perfume smells of the grasse sidewalks, lawns and trees.

19th century legacy

Look up and you will see interesting 19th century architecture in the narrow little streets, however much of it is in a serious state of delapidation and disrepair. A few coachloads of Norwegian tourists visiting the perfume outlets does not create sufficient economic engine to fire up the scale of investment required to revitalise Grasse.

Queen Victoria came here, Princess Pauline Bonaparte, the Emperor's sister, spent several years here for her health. However there is not enough here to attract today's tourist, who is spoiled for choice. A good start has been made re-opening the rail connection with Cannes and the rest of the Riviera. They are rebuilding the main thoroughfare and there is a casino. They put on seasonal festivals and concerts, though travel by public transport - even if possible late at night - is deeply unattractive,

In Grasse, a medieval town in scenery Provence - France,
life is gentle, charming and pleasant.
When from Cannes, Cote D'Azur, it is about 20 km. up to mountain area.

This unique "city of art" has been classed by the Caisse National des Monuments,
and will leave some good memories in your heart and mind.

For fashion photography an excellent area with bright glowing colours.
Grasse is, however first and foremost the perfume capital of the world.
