Travel Tips for Guillestre

Market

by MATIM

Guillestre is a town like a France town should be.
A small square surround by cosy cafe's where the terraces are covered by leaves of huge trees.
An old church, small shops and a track where you are able to play a real French game called jeu de boules.
Every Monday morning from 8.00 am till 1.00 o'clock a market cover the square and streets of Guillestre. This is the biggest market of the Queryas and people from all around plus tourist are visiting.
Local products like olives, lavendel soap, cheese and spices are soled.

Raften at the Durance.

by MATIM

Guillestre is close to the river Durance and the Gull. However the Gull is much tramp shipping then the Durance. You have to be more trained when you like to raft on the Gull.
So obviously we chose for a trip at the Durance.
Rafting takes about 2 hours. Starting at St. Clement at about 18 km you end just before the city of Embrun.
A small bus provide by the raft guide bring you to the start point.
Children are allowed to join from the age of 6 years.
Seeing the mountains from the water instead of the road is even more beautiful.
The what the called "the hole of the Durance"is spectacular (showing you in the picture)
We made our reservations at Maarten van der Laan because he is Dutch and to our surprise he comes from Breda!
Maarten speaks France and English as well.
Before you start you get information about how to row a raft boat and what to do when you fall out.
Maarten provides you from a wet suit, water shoes and life jacket.

The cost of a rafting trip is 30 euro. For 4 persons 29 euros and for 8 persons 28 euro p.p.
You also can make reservations for a sail at a hotdog or a kayak.
THe cost of a trip with a kayak is 38 euros p.p for a half day
1 day 65 euros
