Travel Tips for Hyères

Manège Alexis Godillot, rue Victor Hugo

by JLBG

Godillot had also required Chapoulart to draw the plans for a castle. Only the stables and the ring were built for Godillot's son, in 1882. The buildings draw an U framing a square yard. The ring is in the middle with stables on each side, topped by housing for the employees. It is not open for visits and can only be seen from the outside.

Grand Hotel

by JLBG

Grand Hotel, 62 avenue des Îles d'Or, was built in 1850 and was the first of the luxury hotels in Hyères. The architects were Victor Trotobas and Léon David. It was an entirely new concept, a kind of town in the town with over a hundred bed rooms, all looking southwards, a dining room for over 200 guests, a winter garden, magnificent salons, etc. In 1855-56, it received 45% of the visitors of Hyères. In 1902, one level was added and it received a new décor. In 1950, it was turned by the architect Léon David into private apartments and most of the original fitting out was lost.

Cercle militaire

by JLBG

Cercle militaire "Mixte"!!

"Cercle militaire" is for "Militars club" I suppose, and "mixte" stands for "mixed", both sexes. Obviously the posting "Cercle militaire" has been there for a long time and is stone carved. "Mixte" has been added recently and I wonder if it is not carved on wood! I will not comment!

Restructured house

by JLBG

When walking down rue Sainte Claire, one of the first houses, with a sunny reddish-brownish coating has obviously been built on the remains of a ruined older house, using some of the elements. What was obviously the main entrance with an elegant stone arch, has been walled and is now a window. Smaller windows, at the first level, were also kept with their stone frame.

Villa Noailles, the cubist garden

by JLBG

The triangular garden, also called cubist garden, has been drawn by Gabriel Guévrékian. It is embedded between walls and is the first thing that you see when you arrive to the villa, standing like de bow of a ship.

It has two box trees, pruned as bowls at one end. The main part of the garden is composed of square elements, about 50cmx50cm that are alternatively covered with small pebbles or with low plants. Some of the alleys are painted. The whole garden is strange, at the same time very mineral and full of life. Enlarge the various photos to get an idea of how it looks.
