Would be in Marseille on business trip in the last week of September for a couple of days, would have the evening free, is there any tour during the evening also could you also advise the must see places.

Please also advise what should I eat, any specialities of Marseille or France

merci beaucoup

must do is hire a municipal bike, tour le vieux port and cycle out to the beaches and botanic gardens - should still be quite warm - try bouillabaise the special world renowned fish stew - avoid la gare after dark

Second vote for bouillabaise and served with toast and hot sauce rouille (spell??). Lots of outdoor restaurants around the old port. If you have time during the day, consider a visit to the Notre Dame de la Garde - the main cathedral for Marseilles. Its on top of a small but steep hill almost in the centre of the city and has great views from the terrace that runs around the church.

Travel Tips for Marseille

Soft water reservoir

This basin (see the small scale model on a previous picture), is close to the bottom of the harbor, and was a soft water reservoir where sailors could collect water to fill amphora with water to load on board of their ships before sailing.

As everywhere in France you will also see people here in Marseille playing boules - it is a national sport in France! Surprisingly enough we did not see many places in Marseille, though, since it requires an unpaved surface - and so many places in Marseille are either under construction or - paved!!!

There is also a fabrication of boules pétanques, for more information have a look at my shopping tips!

Fares and passes

by tini58de

We opted for the 3 day pass, which cost 10 €/person (2007). And since a single ticket costs 1,70 €, it takes only 6 rides until you got your money's worth. With this pass you can take all buses and metros, unlimited times! Plus it is so convenient, because you can hop on and off buses, do not have to care to get your tickets, find coins that will go into the vending machines etc.

Highly recommended!

Talking about the weather....

by brunopion

Talking about the weather.
Everyboby in Marseilles thinks that it is always sunny! For one thing, you see the sun at least once a day, even if it's really bad overcast.
And in a week, it can rain what it rains in Paris in a year! it rains more in Marseilles than in Paris...yes in inches of water!

Le Pharo

by iaint

Park located at entrance to Vieux Port from the sea. You can take in the chateau and Fort St Nicholas at the same time.
Great vantage point for seeing Vieux Port & Fort St Jean.
Easy walking distance from Vieux Port. Recommend to stop in dockside bar/cafe on the way back, to refresh the parts and to see/be seen.
