Etap Hotel Marseille Vieux Port

The best Etap we have visited.
Room newly refurbished, (work in progress throughout the hotel 1/12) comfortable and sparkly new!
A winter weekend special rate as well - a fantastic bargain, a simple buffet breakfast just a few Euros extra and is good value in my opinion.
Just a very short walk to Vieux Port with bars and restaurants with bus and metro equally close.
Have to admit enjoyed our stay very much.

Marseille & Nice

by eastrunner

Hi

We want to go to Marseille and Nice for 3 nights, we are flying to Marseille MP2
on ryanair

1. Should we spend 1 night in Marseille and 2 in Nice?

2. Whats a cheap & quick way to get to Nice, train? bus?, should we book ahead or can we buy at local train station? are the prices any different

Thanks

Ticket prices from Marseille to Nice vary from approximately 20€ to 35€ each way for the 2+30 trip.

Pricing and booking information is available here (in French only),

We spent 1 night in Marseilles and 4 in Nice, but we used Nice as a base for 2 day trips - Monte Carlo and Entrevaux. I'd suggest if you only have the 3 nights then travel to Nice and stay there rather than splitting it up. Marseilles is worth staying, but only the old port area and the catherdral is a must see.

Travel Tips for Marseille

La Cité-Radieuse 2: Inside

by BeChar

The Glorious City was designed to be "a town in the town". 1600 people live there in more than 300 apartments from 23 different configurations accommodating single persons up to 10 members families. The building incorporates a wide range of services like crêche, shops, sport facilities, a theatre and a hotel-restaurant.

You can see an apartment preserved and furnished as in the 1950s by calling the building +33 4 91 77 81 74, or the Hôtel Le Corbusier +33 4 91 167800.

Use your hands and arms when you are talking, NEVER be indifferent on any matter. The Marseillais have strong meanings and opinions on everything and everyone. This might of course turn out both ways.

The metro

by JLBG

In Marseille, the traffic is always heavy, and it is difficult to park. One has better to park ones car on the outskirts of the city and use public transportation that is very efficient, fast and cheap. The metro is very good and though it has only two lines, it allows traveling across the city very fast. It should be used as the priority mean of transport.

Abbaye Saint-Victor

by Alimacg

I thought that this would be in the list of "things to do" but it is not...so my sense of it being a little out of the way was correct[?] My son and I were the only people wandering around the Abbaye and it was June...so here is a little information:
The Abbey is near the old port...just follow the signs....and it is open every day. Having visited the Basilica, the Abbey had a much more realistic feel to it...not as touristy!
The crypts contain archeological evidence that suggests that there was a quarry dating back to the Greek era, followed by a Hellenistic necropolis in the 2nd Century BCE. So there! something for the history boffs:)
Between the 7th and 10th Centuries, records are scarce due to the invasions of the Normans and Saracenes...One thing - you will feel as though you have stepped right into history when you wander around the crypts and feel the cold air...

R2) Vieux Port (Old harbour)

by BeChar

Leaving the Information centre to the North-West (Quai des Belges), admire the Old Port. This is the birthplace of Marseille, born 2600 years ago, when the Phocean Greeks arrived and settled, attracted by the natural protection and pure water availability.

Firstly built on the northern bank (Quarter 'Le Panier'), the city was developed later towards east and south, when the ramparts were demolished (17th century).

Nowadays, the Port is a pleasure boat harbour (surface = 250 000 square meter).
