things to do in Marseille

by pjs8285

One of the stops on our cruise is Marseille. We have never been to this area of France and we were wondering if anybody had any suggestions of things to do during our day there? Or any surrounding areas that are easily accessible from the port?

Notre Dame de la Garde - the church on top of the hill above the port. Great views.

There's a hop on - hop off bus tour starting from the old port.

For more detail see my Marseille pages.

I'm adding to previous posters suggestion - the magnificent Notre Dame de la Garde, but instead of the hop on hop off bus, take the local bus from the Vieux Port (Old Port) - much cheaper. If you go to my Marseilles Page there is a write up of my experiences at the church.

Suggest you might like to have lunch and enjoy the traditional Marseilles dish of bouillabaisse (fish stew) served with crusty toasted bread and a savagely hot sauce Rouille.

Enjoy.

Sorry I didn't mena take the bus to Notre Dame. Walking is better!

The bus is a good way to see lots of stuff quickly, then you can go back to see something you liked (or get off and get back on again, of course).

Travel Tips for Marseille

As preparation to your trip...

by AlfredSt

As preparation to your trip you should read Transit, the fabulous book by Anna Seghers. This book deals with an attempted escape involving hundreds of émigrés caught up in a bureaucratic nightmare in Vichy France as they frantically try to acquire the documents which will allow them to escape by ship from Marseille before they are seized by (or handed over to) the advancing Nazis. If you walk then yourself down the Canebiere (name of the famous main road leading to the Vieux Port) you will understand the book and Marseille even better.

Jardin Pierre Puget

by rwlittle

We snapped this photo of a statue of A. Pierre Puget, with a small waterfall behind, at Jardin Pierre Puget. This was a nice little familar park, which we encountered as we walked up from the old harbor (Vieux Port) to see Notre Dame de la Garde.

great restaurant in the Vieux Port

by garethj about Le Mas de Luli

An excellent little restaurant just next to the Vieux Port. The menu is varied with a good selection of salades as well as more traditional hot dishes. If the weather is good, then you should take advantage of the terrace, the perfect place to enjoy a glass of Pastis. the salads were all excellent, just what you need on a hot summers day.

The "Chateau d'If"...

by grovier

It's the french military monument most visited...but it was essentially a jail, where stayed the " Masque de fer" and many wellknown prisonners.
Situated on a little Island called "If" you have to sail before to visit it.

Red walk : the "Diamant house"

by ptitetoile
