The Greco-Roman harbor today
by JLBG
Inside the Musée d'Histoire de Marseille (museum of history of Marseille), in the "Jardin des Vestiges" (Garden of remains), the wall across the picture was the main quay of the harbor and the lawn is instead of the seawater. It dates back to the Ist century AD. It began soon to silt up and at the end of the Vth century, was completely full. Check with the small scale model on the previous picture.
Home of Olympique Marseille
by tini58de
The Stade/Velodrome is the home of Olympique Marseille. It holds 60000 spectators and is the largest club stadium in France. It was built in 1937 for the soccer championships in 1938. Just recently there were plans to make it even larger (to hold up to 80000), but there were protests about the high costs, so this plan was not accomplished.
In front of the stadium you can rollerscate, which lots of people did, when we were there on a sunday morning.
Train
by BeChar
The train is a good way to reach other cities (ex: Cassis-Toulon, Paris). The TGV connects Marseille to Paris every hour, in about 3 hours travelling.
Buying a ticket at the desk requests patience (long queues). Automatic machines are available.
Station St Charles is close to coach and car Rental agencies and has a left-luggage office (4.50, 6 or 8 EUR, according to size, up to 72 hours).
In 1970, my grand father, a retired station master, offered my brothers an electrical train with the same engine !! (67002, if I remember well)
