THE OLD HARBOUR
Hans, Wim and I just loved taking a stroll along THE OLD HARBOUR. It was an exciting, busy place and a hub of activity. There were lots of shops, restaurants and outdoor patios. An excellent place to people watch.

Me contemplating between courses
Hi,
I'm planning to visit Marseille, France, in October and would like to know whether it is possible to go on an organised boat-tour to see the calanques during this period?
Thanks in advance for your replies!

Your question reminded me of a lovely visit to the Calanques from east of Marseille at a seaside town called Cassis.
I have opened the web page and have been listening to the background music in French. Have left it on as it is so soothing. But the female singer is certainly not French. I wonder who she is !

The mistral wind that blows with such force down the Rhone valley at times, is certainly a deciding factor as to whether the boat goes out to sea.
Thanks a lot. Your reply was very useful to me. I have noted the details.
I took one out of Cassis and it was wonderful but a word of warning. I got drenched - soaked to the bone - on the way back when some large waves developed and the boat was stuffed with people. You might want to carry a poncho or other waterproof with you or have a change of clothes ready.
Of course you can sail from Marseille or Cassis, if you have a car.
Grovier- neat idea sailing with a car. Doesn't it leak though when you open the door ?
For budget and eco friendly tourists, there is a nice railway that links Marseille and Cassis in less than 30 minutes. Saves paying those extortionate parking fees.
Thank you for your reply:-D
Can your recommend any hotels close to Cassis, or in the calanques?
There are a few hotels in Cassis including this one http://pagesperso-orange.fr/jardemil/index.html but never stayed so cannot judge if this is the ideal place to sleep.

Thanks a lot for your help. I'll check them out:-D
Have a nice day!

If you search for different items than standardized highstreet items, Cours Julien area is the place to go. you will find:
- Local Fashion Designers
- Fair Trade
- Vintage clothing
- Second hand bookshops
- Market
all are listed in the pdf guide book i have wriiten and that you can download for free on my blog
Take the TGV from Paris and watch the landscape and light turn into Mediterranean. It's beautiful.
The metro is great, so are the buses once you figure out of it. Only negative thing is that normal lines close at 2100 and night buses at 0030. They did keep the metro open until 0030 while I was there, but I don't know if this is the case year round.
Cassis is a delightful village about a half hour by train from Marseilles. When I was living in Aix, this is where we'd go on a weekend or afternoon to spend time by the Mediterranean. The beach can become a bit cramped, but the water and cliffs are beautiful. There's even a large float to relax on (that looks closer to swim to than it is. :) Before or after the beach, it's fun to walk around Cassis. There's an outdoor market close-by (I'm unsure of how many days it runs) as well as shops, cafes, and delicious ice cream stands.
Close to Saint Victor I found this bakers shop. Four des Navettes has provided bread and pastry to the citizens of Marseille since the era of the French revolution and claims to be the oldest "boulangerie" in Marseille. I do not think it has much competion.
