Can anyone recommend any?
Ideally would love to do some boat trips but I don't know what's available. I won't have a car.

we did the speed boat tour of the calanques and loved it. we are not "tour" people, but there were only 7 folks on the boat and it was very laid back. stopped several places for a swim and had a great time. bring some snacks, but they did provide drinks.
forgot to add...we also took the local bus to Aix on market day. Cheap fun and a very different feel than Marseille.

On the "Marché aux poissons", you will find only extra fresh fish, caught during the very early morning along the neighboring and rocky shores by fishermen on their typical boats, the "pointus". They are called "pointus" because both ends are sharp.
The Red Line of History is a marked walk from Vieux Port into the Panier (basket of Marseille) it takes a leisurely two hours if you don't go in the cathedral but, I would allow an afternoon to go walking around the old streets. It's a hilly area.
At 2 euros the medeiterranean archaeology museum is reasonably priced. The entrance can be a little tricky to find. There are interesting exhibits on Ionian/Greek and Egyptian history, but all information is in French.
The City Hall of Marseille is one of the few old (baroque) buildings on the Vieux Port. It has survived the destruction of this area by the Germans in 1943. The city hall was built in 1653. To the left and right you will find some (as I think) rather ugly modern buildings....
The City Hall is the starting point for the "red walk" through the panier area (see my next tip).
