marseille to nice?

by blueberry88

We're hoping to stay in marseille for a few days at the end of our trip as accomidation is cheaper than Nice. We fly home from Nice airport. How easy is transportation from Marseille to Nice?

Plenty of trains Marseille-Nice, mostly TER (train express regional), not fast but lovely coastal journey (2H30), €28-€32 single.

Niec is not that expensive for accommodation BTW, Nice Garden Hotel (11 rue du Congres) is excellent and only about €70 for a double, has great rooms and a lovely garden.
So is Villa Rivoli (10 rue de Rivoli), same price as NGH.

I think you will have a more enjoyable time in Nice and since you have to go there anyway, why not stay there and pay the few extra euros.

Nice is lovely but so is Marseille, not in the same way but it would be a mistake to dismiss it, and there you can see one of France's most beautiful natural wonders: the Calanques (15 miles of Marseille -by boat from the Vieux Port).

Marseille is obviously less "classy" than Nice, but its Old Port (Vieux Port) area is wonderful, the city has really pulled out all the stops in the last 10 yrs or so to shake off its dodgy image and IMO is succeeding, lots of Parisians are settling down there (averages €3000 sq metre for property in central Marseille as opposed to €6,500 in Paris). This city really is changing, and yes it may still be a little dirty in places and a little run-down at times, it is hardly recognisable compared to the 80s or 90s.

I like Marseille's gritty side, the old town, the architecture, the Place des Moulins in the Panier district, the Place de Lenche and its colourful daily market, the lovely Corniche (beautiful walkway overlooking the sea right up to the Prado beaches), th Chateau d'if (take a boat from the harbour), the L'estaque quarter (a lovely liitle port), very traditional and impossibly charming, famous for its association with painters and movements such as impressionism, fauvism and cubism (where the likes of Braque, Cezanne, Renoir, Dufy, etc. came to paint). The panoramic view from there is exceptional.

Travel Tips for Marseille

The square tower

This is all what remains from a square tower that was part of the city wall and of the defense system of the city. It sadly exemplifies well what has been said "that Marseille was an ancient city that had little if no ancient remains" !

watch world football cup games in Marseille

by kimmars

If you are in Marseille during World football cup 2010, and want to watch games, I suggest if you really want to have fun to go on Place Notre Dame du Mont. All the cafés and restaurants there put out large TV screens on the terraces. It's like being in a stadium. especially when France is playing.

Buy a pizza or a kebab from one of the street vendors or one of the hundreds of small restaurants serving good food from all over the world at really low prices.
As always in Marseille, friendly, passionate people.

must do!

You can see this monument from all over, on its hilltop location. Walk up fro the Vieux Port (don't take a tour bus or one of the silly little toy trains) to appreciate the different parts of the city on the way.

Watch out for the Jardin P Puget with its waterfalls and monument to P Braille.

Further on, notice the Sherman tank, commemorating the Resistance uprising in 1944.

Panoramic views of the whole city from the top.

Church itself still bears scars of 1944 - bullet + shrapnel holes

Cathedral la Major

by littlesam1

Green stone from Florence, white marble from Carrare, Calissane and Gard stone, onyx from Italy and mosaics from Venice make up most of the materials used to build this Byzantine inspired Cathedral. Although impressive I could not say it was beautiful. The different colored marble and stones make it unique but not necessarily classic. While we were in Marseille the cathedral was being worked on and there was partial scaffolding on one side of it.
