chartreux area safe?

by tp2010sf

hi - I am going to be in Marseille for a month... and found an apartment in the chartreux area of marseille (it's close to where I need to be)... is that a safe area? Or is there a better area, I should stay at and take the metro to Chartreux?

thanks,
tp

Re: chartreux area safe?

by puerto_lover

This may not help but if I am looking at a new location and want to get some feel I often open Google Maps and use Street View to virtually look around. From using this I can gain some more knowledge of the type of neighbourhood. Assuming that the street/s you are looking at are actually on Street View.

Travel Tips for Marseille

Vieux Port

by hsodaye

Its a small walking town and you will be able to cover it with leisure in 1.5-2 days, 1 day is also possible but I would not recommend it.
1st day can be spent in the old town, take a guided tour from the tourist information centre near Vieux port and evening can be spent on the beach.
Next day the other side of the Vieux port covering the Notre Dame de la Garde area. very big town with lot of food options are available

Roman sewage exhaust

by JLBG

This structure is what remains of a Roman sewage exhaust leading all sewage from the city … directly into the harbor. Inside, it is 70-80 cm high, which means there was a complete system of smaller sewage pipes running under the Roman city.

Eglise des Chartreux

by aliante1981

Eglise des Chartreux church stands on Place Audran. This enormous religious buildings is all that remains of a Carthusian monastery that was since destroyed. The interesting side of it is that is was built to the design of the prior, Jean-Baptiste Berger between the years 1680 and 1702. He was not only saving souls, then…

Delicious Couscous near Old Port

by BeChar about Chez Mamy

Go to that restaurant to eat Couscous. The owner belongs to a Tunisian family owning restaurants and shops selling Tunisian pastries.

We were kindly served a Couscous prepared with attention, for a low price (nature 4,50 EUR, kip 6.00 EUR ... full royal 14 EUR).

Chateau d'If

by Babzz

The island of If was uninhabited until the 16th century, when King Francois I, realising its military potential, ordered a fortress to be built on it. Shortly after, the fortress was converted to a prison and later made famous in the novel "The Count of Monte Cristo" by Alexandre Dumas. Alexandre Dumas had met José Custodio Faria, a monk and former inmate, and was so impressed with this man that he fashioned the 'mad monk' in his novel after him. The prison was closed in the late 19th century and opened to the public in 1890.

The Chateau d'If can be reached by boat from the Vieux Port (Old Port) in Marseille.
