We're retired and like many people in the UK this 'summer' booked an unplanned escape to the sun in june. The closest venue offering wall-to-wall sun for a week was the French Riviera. I booked flights to Nice, ( almost sold out) and checked out hotels, realising fast that the price levels on the French Med are 50% higher than in Spain. I hesitated too long in making a decision, resulting in most reasonably-priced internet recommendations being snapped up by other Northern European sun-hunters. So I focussed on Menton, an hour's bus ride from Nice airport and sandwiched between the Italian border and Monaco, booking Hotel de Londres because they had reasonable write-ups and had a room available for 6 nights.
The hotel is pretty central, and being set back from the main road with sound-proofed air-conditioned rooms, (albeit small) satisfied the key criteria. At 100 euros per night, however , we felt that sheets/towels might have been changed once over the week . We had a front-facing room, which was`lucky , as the back of the hotel faces a brick wall !
Staff changed quite frequently during the week, most of them being pleasant enough, without putting themselves out too much. Express breakfast (4 euros) was juice, coffee and fresh croissants, enjoyed on the outside terrace.
Our summary; Worth a stay for up to a max of 3 nights, and only if the weather is guaranteed , as the rooms are too small to live in !

Unique Quality: close to beaches/old town/transport. This means you can pack a beach bag, and access public beaches in 5 minutes (cleanest water but pebbly) , and private beaches in 15 minutes (around 10 euros a day for sunlunger and brolly)
The 100 bus stops outside the hotel , going to Nice via Monaco, well worth a visit.
10 minutes train ride to Ventimiglia in Italy

Directions: West of the old town, 10 minutes walk from the train/bus station.
