    Hotel Riviera

    by

We stayed at the Hotel Riviera for two nights after arriving in southern France. I initially selected the hotel because of its location near the train station, knowing that it would be a walk to the main sites of Nice. The location was perfect for our needs and the walk to the beach area and other sites was an easy 15 minute walk down wide pedestrian streets full of shops.

The highlight of our stay at the Hotel Riviera was definitely the staff, especially Norbert, who was on duty when we checked in and the following evening we were there. He was extremely helpful and knowledgeable about Nice and the events going on in town and the surrounding towns. Norbert answered with ease any question we happened to have and was a lot of fun to simply talk to about the area. I was impressed by how many languages he spoke and his enthusiasm to help the guests at the hotel.

Our room was small, but nothing out of the ordinary for a European hotel. And we only showered and slept in our room so I thought it was just fine. We paid €65/night for a queen size bed. The rate came with free wi-fi and free breakfast, as well as a free boxed lunch on request. Our room on the fifth floor was peaceful and clean and came with a refrigerator that proved useful.

Breakfast was a buffet of breads (croissants, pain au chocolate, and other breads), fruit and juices, yogurts, cereals, eggs, and meats and cheeses. It was just enough to get us going for our busy days.

We happened to be there on the first night of the Carnival season and Norbert told us about getting free seats for the show. Without his insider knowledge, we probably would have stood on the street to watch the event.

The proximity to the train station made it super easy for us to catch the #99 bus from the airport to the station and then just a couple minutes walk to the hotel. This bus is a direct bus without a lot of stops. On our return to the airport, we found that the #23 bus is only €1, although it does make a few more stops and it ends at the airport.

Would I stay here again? Definitely! And I recommend others to stay here if you are not looking to have a waterfront view but rather the convenience of public transportation. Stay here just to meet Norbert!

FRENCH RAIL STRIKE

by marknit

Have just seen on the web that there is to be a rail strike in France tomorrow (13/4/210) dose anyone know if this affects the NICE area???

The militant train drivers are out on strike constantly - its the CGT union and its war on the government. The management of the SNCF are useless - they sometimes try to run a skeleton service with the TGV - one in four - but local services are generally a write off.Its France. Striking is a sacred right.
I would put any travel plans on ice. The roads will be nasty so bus will be a very slow alternative.

Travel Tips for Nice

Like a rolling stone

by rickyvilla81

The beach is not as sandly as you might like. The coastline is pretty spactacular though, as you fall in love with the Baie des Anges, and watch the sun swoop slowly into the Med. Here am I on the beach, and practising my use of the Force with a stone. Watch out, Anakin!

BEST BEACHES AROUND THE...

by Pomska

BEST BEACHES AROUND THE NICE
Best teen and twenties beach is in Juan-les-Pins. The all-night bars, cafes
and nightclubs of Juan-les-Pins make it lively beach resort.
Best activity beach is in Nice. Watersports fanatics gather at the Ruhl-Plage
in Nice for the jet-skiing and parasailing.
You'll find the best wintern beach in Menton. It's the warmest resort on the
Riviera and the sun shines all year round and that's why it's ideal for relaxing
winter holidays.
The best family beaches are Frejus-Plage and the beach of St-Raphael. The
beaches are clean, safe and have excellent facilities. </

The Museum of Asian Arts ...

by AndreasK

The Museum of Asian Arts opened only three years ago portraying the diversity of Asia, in particular Chinese, Japanese, Cambodian and Indian cultures, e.g. the red and grey sandstone sculptures may be found throughout Cambodia; the Japanese tea ceremony is celebrated in the Tea Pavilion. The museum is located at Cimiez, about an hour's walk, or a short bus ride from the center.

La Trinité

by ForestqueenNYC

This is a village/suburb immediately outside of Nice. I got lost there, otherwise, I would have never known it existed. I saw a train station in the center, but don't know if it is still in use. This is not a particularly attractive place, at least not the part I saw, but I ate the best food there in a strictly not touristic restaurant. This is the only reason why I mention it at all. See my restaurant reviews for more information.

Cannes

by keeweechic

Cannes is the 'star' of the French Riviera, famous for the International Film Festival and the glitzy hotels, cars, beaches and the visitors attracted here. You will find a mix of exotic and ‘normal’ people and plenty of poodles (it is France, after all). There are an abundance of yachts and cruise ships hovering in the blue waters.

The city of Cannes is centred around the old port, with the central part quite compact. The famous 'Croisette' is the boulevard and the beach that extends around the bay to the east of the port, in the protected 'Rade de Cannes'.
