Why is the Aston rated 2 star with trip advisor???
by A TripAdvisor Member
When I was looking for the Grand Hotel Aston on the trip advisor site, I could not find it at first because it is classed two star. This worried me, but I did notice that the reviews staring from 2004 seemed to be good for the most part.
I did well to keep my reservation! I have stayed in a few of the other 4* hotels in Nice before and this was my favorite. The location was perfect and the staff and services very good. The staff at the reception informed me that the hotel underwent extensive renovations in 2003 and 2004, so I guess this is why there is such a difference in the reviews.
This is a very good 4 star hotel, and I would definitely recommend it to others!
Location

We stayed here in May 2005. The hotel is a little on the shabby side with small rooms, however it was clean and the location cannot be beat for the price. It is near the water - from the top floors you see the sea. It is also right near the pedestrian shopping area and the old town - you can walk everywhere, including the bus station. We had no problems with noise from our room on the 4th floor.
Rooftop pool was an oasis of calm!

We have just arrived back fron spending 5 nights in the Hotel Aston.
The hotel has a fantastic location close by to the old town which is the best side of Nice to be in. The rooftop pool at the Aston was an oasis of calm!
You had to pay 12 euros per day for the privelege which included pool access, sunbed use and free water....if you've a day free don't miss out on a chillout day on the rooftop with amazing views across nice.
The rooms at the Aston were a little dated but during our stay we discovered that the hotel was in the process of modernisation so maybe we were just unlucky....check before you book as you maybe disappointed otherwise....
overall a good hotel 4 star...
Beware
by TripAdvisor Member MA2
This hotel charges an extra 12 euros per day per guest to use their pool. They do not mention this in their advertising or at check-in, and it is a big shock to unsuspecting guests who are already paying a high price for this hotel. Even more tacky, is the fact that they only charge 3 euros more for non patrons to use the pool, and that certainly doesn't make the paying guests feel very valued! Also, the rooms are old and need considerable upgrading (painting, cleaner carpets etc.) especially since it is supposed to be a 4 star hotel. My advice: stay elsewhere and swim in the ocean!
Don't book through Cresta .......
by TripAdvisor Member Velsheda
We have stayed here twice. The first time we booked through Cresta and got the condemened cell. Very shabby, grotty bathroom, small room and dark. Apparently it was a slightly upgraded double fountain view room at the front of the hotel. We even had scafolding outside our window so no view. The builders started work well before breakfast so no privacy either. Rated at the bottom end of two star!
Complained to reception and we were immediately offered a far superior room for a small supplement. This was truely excellent. Moral - don't book through Cresta if you want a decent room. We are going back for a third visit this year but making our own booking.
Most staff excellent but don't expect them all to speak French! English is OK though.
Great location, dilapidated room
by TripAdvisor Member Merebruin
We stayed at the Aston for five nights in September, and I would not return unless I was guaranteed a very recently refurbished room. Our room had a small terrace and an interesting view, but it was in appalling condition; everything was worn and patchy looking. The supply of towels was sparse indeed, and if one wanted a towel to use at the pool, it was necessary to rent one at the rate of 12 Euros. The breakfast was exorbitant in price, and the one morning that we ate there, they were out of many things. Perhaps this situation was fortunate since after the first morning we ate delightful breakfasts outdoors in the old city and watched the setup for a festival. The hotel is well located, and with the exception of one woman, the staff was helpful and pleasant. And the view from the rooftop swimming pool and restaurant is fantastic. I simply feel that at 250 Euros per nights, we were grossly overcharged for what the Aston has to offer.
I Would Not Stay Here Again

We just got back from staying at the Grand Aston. It is the perfect location and when you see the hotel's exterior as well as the remodeled lobby, hallways and the top floor restaurant and bar, you think you are going to be in for a grand experience. However the rooms are terrible. Most have not been renovated. When we first checked in, we were given a room that had not been serviced from the prior check out. When we attempted to call the lobby, the phone did not work.
We were given another room and it wasn't much better:
The carpet was old, the mattresses were cheap, old and very uncomfortable, the furniture in the room we got looked like it was from the 1960's, and was cheap plastic laminate that was all chipped and broken. Our room was very dirty. We never got soaps or shapoos and worst yet, there were roaches in the room! The icing on the cake was when we got ready to check out, there were charges on our room that we had never made and the hotel refused to do anything about it.
The worst 4 star hotel I've ever stayed in.
Nice Location, Shame about the Rooms

Had to stay here (on business) for a conference held at the Acropolis convention Centre which is right down the street.
The hotel exterior is fine, and upon arrival I was impressed to see unifromed staff outside on their hands and knees polishing the railings !!
Reception was busy but quite efficient, and I have to admit the staff WERE helpful.
Upon arrival in the "superior" room (for which I had paid a premium)..I found :
Toilet Barely working (flush mechanism broken)
Shower leaking
General untidiness
Bath stained (limescale not removed)
The "fountain view" was TECHNICALLY there, but only if I had the neck of a giraffe !
I would NOT stay here again, as at a similar rate, it is possible to stay at other, newly refurbished hotels for similar rates.
The location is convenient to both the "seafront" and the convention centres (10-12 mins walk)
