Spontaneous Nice break

by finaldest

Hi all,

a friend and I plan to fly in to Nice tomorrow, leaving on Saturday morning (to get back in time to watch the Germany match ;)).

Wonder if anyone can help with tips related to:
a) Beaches
b) Art (I understand that some museum holds some Degas, Manets etc.?)
c) Nightlife - where can one go dancing; a friendly pub/bar/cafe
d) Anything else for someone who's never been to Nice.

BTW, is Nice generally safe (violent crime wise)? Any parts of the city one would do well to avoid?

Cheers,
Srikanth

Been a long time but I remember the beach at Nice being very rocky. Nearby Canne has nicer sandy beach.

Thanks a lot! Have too little time to plan any excursions from Nice, unfortunately. Let's see - perhaps will be lucky.

Surely there are some pages on Nice here on VT. You could read some of them in order to find out what to see and do in Nice.

Travel Tips for Nice

Nice and the Cote d'Azur

by Pavlik_NL

For most people Nice and the Cote d'Azur are almost synonimous. Nice can be concidered the capitol of the Cote d'Azur, which is the popular name of the French mediterranean coastline between (roughly) Frejus and the Italian border. Nice is the fifth largest town in France and in touristic point of view the number two after - of course - Paris. Nice is also the main gate to this touristic hotspot and might be best choosen as start (and finish) of a holiday along the beautiful Cote d'Azur. Ilja playing in the sand along the Baie des Anges and fighting the (quite strong) waves together with daddy.

The streets of Vieux Nice are...

by Tolik

The streets of Vieux Nice are too narrow for buses; this is a place you should walk. The central square is place Rosetti where Baroque Cathedrale de St-Reparate just manages to be visible in the concatenation of 8 narrow streets. A few minutes walk from here is place du Palais de Justice (on the picture).

By 'eck - now even the beers's gone bloomin' pink!

by NiceLife

Hot sun demands cold beer. But for a little extra Riviera style style ask your waiter for a "bierre pression "Monaco" " - that's draught beer with a liberal squoosh of Grenadine - a cordial of red and black fruits of the forest.

Once you get over the shock of the red, it tastes great, and you'll come back for more. And doesn't it look great against an azure blue sky? I want some now, just looking at it!

If unconvinced, try asking for a "Panache" (pronounced pan-a-shay".) Thats French for beer cut with lemonade, better known as a shandy. Or a bierre "gomme" - with creme de menthe. Hell, or just a beer. But unless you want a specific brand of bottled beer, be sure to ask for just a "Bierre Pression" - draft - and remember that the usual serving is a tiny 25cl - a half pint.
Ask for " a pinte" or cinquante - 50 cl but be prepared for a shock - its usually at around seven euro for a pint.

Whatever you order you can't go wrong. It tastes a whole lot better under Riviera sun.

L'orchestre d'harmonie de Nice

by ange_famine

This orchestra gives free concerts of classical music.
For the 2009 spring season, book your sunday afternoons:
From March, 1st to April, 26th, you'll find them in the Eglise Notre-Dame du port (the church on the harbour), at 15h30, for a (free) hour of music.
After that, from Mai, 3rd, they'll play again in the outside in the kiosk in the middle of the Jardin Albert 1er garden.

The balcony of Nice - Gairaut

by NiceLife

Unknown to the casual visitor, up in the hills behind Nice is its magnificent "balcony" - Gairaut. Walking along side the two kilometre Canal de Gairaut rewards the adventurous with magnificent views out to sea over the city. Favoured by joggers and walkers, the canal winds around the hillside offering a rare glimpse of the very french Chateau d'Azur perched high above the city. The Canal starts starts at the bus stop "Super Rimiez" (route 25 from Nice Centre) and a short walk nearby, route 15 (Les Roses) via Cimiez. Expect no coaches or fellow tourists - this is deep Nice.

The canal disappears a few hundred yards from the pretty local church, in whose cemetery you will find the family tomb of the notorious mayors of Nice, father and son, Jean and Jacques Medecin, after whom the main street of Nice is named. Shenanigans galore when the mayor fled Nice to South America when charged with corruption.

Beyond this is the strange swiss chalet perched above a waterfall, the Cascade de Gairaut, where the waters of the river Vesubie once flowed. It is maintained by the French water Companie General des Eaux, whose headquaters is based in a magnificent science fiction/art deco building at Les Roses.

A great adventurous half day,but not for the faint-hearted!
