More about Hotel Gounod Nice
Best Kept Secret
by TripAdvisor Member JohnDoeTyneandwear
My wife and I spent 12 nights in Hotel Gounod Nice during the 17-29th July 2005.
The hotel is well located and run by the friendliest staff we have encountered in many years of holidaying in France.
The rooms are spacious and comfortable in keeping with the period decor and furniture, it is a little worn but clean and well furnished it has avoided the sanitised feel of modern mainstream hotel chains.
The bathroom was modern and kept very clean.
Whilst breakfast is the only meal served there are many nearby restaurants for lunch and dinner.
The staff were friendly, helpful and chatty and made our stay very enjoyable.
The facilities of Hotel Splendid next doorare available to Gounod guests and include a swimming pool, jaccuzzi. etc.
A very nice affordable hotel in a great location for the beach, restaurants and the railway station.
Fantastic value for money

We used this site to work out which hotel to select for our recent long weekend to Nice. It certainly didn't disappoint. Yes, its not the most modern of hotels but you aren't in the rooms long enough to care. The rooms are spacious, as are the bathrooms, and the air conditioning is a godsend. The facilities at the sister hotel next door are great and the roof top pool and jacuzzi must be sampled. Hotel Gounod has the perfect location for the Promenade and the train station. Catch a train to Cannes, Monaco or Juan Les Pins - you will want to go back for more. I will definitely return to Nice and to this hotel.
Good Base for Cote D'Azur

We stayed 5 nights at the Hotel Gounod in October. While our room on the second floor was large, with balconies both off the bedroom and the bath, I must admit I was at first disappointed in the room's decor. It was dark and apeared to be in need of TLC. However, it was clean and the bathroom was large and modern. But our disappointment dispelled in the days that followed because we found the location, the breakfasts, and especially the friendly staff offset the room's appearance. We were made to feel right at home. The staff gave us good restaurant recommendations and were always ready to assist us. Two restaurants - La Torque Blanche and Restaurant Le Chantilly- were excellent and within close walking distance to the hotel.
We used the train to go to Monaco. As you come out of the station, you cross the street and catch the bus to go the Rock and the Palace. There is a tourist train that runs from the oceanarium to all the sights in Monaco such as the Monte Carlo Casino. We went to Antibes and after touring caught the tourist train to Juan-les-Pins. On another day, we took the train to Cannes. We also took the Train des Pignes into the Hault Alps. With our daily train trips, we really appreciated the Hotel Gounod's central location.
It is an advantage to be able to use the pool, jacuzzi and beach of the Hotel Splendid which is next door. I would definitely stay at the Hotel Gounod if you are planning to use the hotel as a base to tour the area.
Awful!

After looking at reviews on this site and a couple of travel books we decided to book our 3 nights in Nice at the Hotel Gounod. When we arrived at the hotel the lobby smelled heavily of cigarette smoke even for France. The hotel is extremely rundown inside and out. Broken shutters, peeling paint, stained carpets. Although our room was large, the air conditioning didn't work (it was very warm in Nice at this time), the bathroom was dirty and after inspecting the sheets it appeared that the bedding hadn't been changed. Our quoted rate was 142 euros/night which is insane for this hotel. When we complained and asked for another room the staff was not very helpful. The Gounod was by far the worst hotel I've been in. We left and went in search of another hotel.
We found a really nice one on the same block, La Malmaison. The staff was extremely pleasant, the hotel had just been remodeled so everything was new. You could even smell a hint of fresh paint which beats cigarette smoke anyday! The air-conditioning worked and breakfast was included. We ended up with a large bright corner room with two large windows for only 130 euros/night. It made for a very nice stay in Nice. I would recommend La Malmaison to anyone travelling to Nice.
Ok but more like 2 star

We stayed here a couple weeks ago, and found this hotel a bit run down. The splendid hotel next door had a great deal going for 135 euro per night with a free dinner and champagne, plus they put us in a delux room with huge balcony. We couldnt turn this down, and ending up loving our stay. I would recommend paying a little more for a four star hotel.
Brilliant Hotel

Fantastic hotel, great location , very affordable,
Got there three of us , were upgraded to 2 seperate rooms at no extra cost.
Massive rooms, very tidy. The staff were all very helpful but the head guy there went out of his way to make sure we were all sorted.
Breakfast was simple and ample.
Only semi bad thing i can say about this place was that there was no shower curtain but that is being overly picky.
Great Hotel

We booked this hotel as part of a package off Travelzoo, and did not know anything about it at the time. Based on other reviews, we believed it was centrally located and reasonably priced. After staying at the Gounod, we strongly recommend it for anyone who likes a bargain. The hotel is older, but very clean. The decor was typically french and our room had two french doors that led out to a terrace. The bathroom was clean. Our room also had the bedroom, but also a sitting room with a couch and chair. The staff was very friendly and helpful. And the complimentary continental breakfast was exceptional. We looked forward to the breakfast all 6 nights we stayed at the Gounod. They served breads and lunch meat, cheeses, yogurt, fruit, sausage, scrambled eggs, pastries, cereal, juice and coffee. The hotel is in a great location for walking around the pedestrian area of Nice and a few minutes walk from the beach. There are great restaurants close by. Also, the hotel has a parking area which we used since we had a rental car. They charged 12 euros a night to park there, but it was convenient for us since we woke up early every morning, ate the complilmentary breakfast and drove to places like Monaco, Cannes, Marseille, Avignon and at the end of our trip, to Italy.
Convenient location

The hotel has a very convenient location, walking distance to the train station (a few blocks) and walking distance to promenade des Anglais/the beach. The room was spacious with a sitting area and balcony, but was a little bit worn. We also did not have a shower curtain, making the bathroom floor wet after showering. The breakfast was very good...they actually had scambled eggs! We found an excellent rate (80 Euro), making this a great deal!
One warning (nothing to do with the hotel), taxis are very expensive. We took taxis at night to go to restaurants in other areas, but I would recommend walking. We weren't that familiar with the area when we first arrived and took a taxi for about a 5 minute ride and it cost 15 euro!
Very nice hotel

This was an older hotel convenient to the boardwalk of Nice. The front desk staff were professional and helped my wife book an appointment in Grasse for her perfume workshop. They also upgraded our triple to a suite at no additional cost. Although we did not use it, the sister property next door, Splendid Hotel, offers Gounod guests access to the pool and fitness center. Overall we were very happy with this property and would love to return in the future.
