Nice - Itinerary advice

by jadedtourist

Hi,

My husband and I will travel to Nice during the Easter weekend with our 5 year old. We have 5 days to spend (excluding travel to and from). We are very interested in exploring the towns and villages and sight seeing (don't mind touristy spots). Not really beach people beyong may be a walk along the shore. We really like museums and walks/hike but have to go easy on both on account of our son.

1) We would like to visit Eze, St Paul De Vence, Monaco and Antibes. Is this doable in 5 days and what is the best way to do this itinerary- I don't mind having to be on the go but do not want to be impossibly rushed. Believe these towns are only about 20-30 minutes away from Nice, hence the ambition

2) Our son usually gets by quite well as long as we find him some down time in a nice park or play area. He would love water sport activities that are age appropriate and fun. Any suggestions?(don't want to go the Marine land and spend a whole day though)

3) I heard from a friend about a scenic train to Dignes. Would you suggest doing this at the cost of dropping one of the other places on my list?

3) We are vegetarians - any suggestions on restaurants that aren't insanely expensive?

Thank you so much - this turned out to be a long post!

Within Nice itself, there is, of course, the promenade which stretches the whole length of the coast there and is wide enough to allow loads of roller bladers/skaters to zoom past you while you eat your ice-cream!
The path eventually takes to to the foot of Castle Hill (Colline du Chateau) with the windy-path up to the park land and views from the top. There is a lift (elevator) but the path is fairly easy-going and allows you to see the waterfalls and ponds on the way up. The views from the top are magnificent with some people recommending the view at sunset as being especially lovely.
You can go-past this entrance and walk around to the harbour area too.
Parts of the beach are very stony with large rounded pebbles that can be hard to walk-over. The sea shelves steeply there too so if you do manage a swim, watch out! (we managed in early October but it was quite cold!)
Can't help with veggie restaurants I'm afraid but there are some super pizza places in the old town which may well offer a choice for you.

Thanks...that was helpful..

Can I do a day trip covering Villefranches Sur, Exe and Monaco? I believe Villefranches and Eze are on the same train line and there are trains from Eze to Monaco?

Thanks for all the info.

In Nice, it looks like most places are within walkable and other areas like Cimiez are reachable by bus. Is there a day travel card of some kind for buses?

The bus 112 goes upto Eze village and then on to Monaco. Does it run on Sundays? The website displays a timetable for 112 but I'm reading in the forum that 112 doesn't run on Sundays..

Also where do I get off at Monaco?

Travel Tips for Nice

Nice, the capital of the...

by Tolik

Nice, the capital of the Riviera and fifth largest city in France, acts as a magnet attracting people from all over the world, for a multitude of reasons. Both elegant and simple, Nice's charm comes from its exceptional climate as well as its beauty. Even in May the café terraces are filled with people happily drinking and contemplating the ultra famous Promenade des Anglais. Always in flower, this wonderful walk follows along the bay, looking out onto the Baie des Anges and the beaches on one side, and on the other such luxury hotels as the Negresco.

Weather

by Elainehead

Nice is known for its mild and sunny, year-round weather, however it can rain a lot in March-April and October-November.

Natural call while in Nice?

by Elainehead

If you are in the city center (ie, around Avenue Jean Medecin), you will find toilets (They are no longer free, so you'll need 0.50 € to access them) on the last floor of Nice Etoile Shopping Mall . They are next to Nature & Decouvertes shop.

If you are desperate, you may try...

On Avenue Jean Medecin, but towards Place Massena, you can find toilets at Galeries Lafayette (no longer free - if you need coins, there's a change machine inside), they are on the third floor, close to the stairs. Notice: it's a mixed WC with no windows, so they usually smell bad. I would rather go to the ones at Nice Etoile Shopping Mall.

At Fnac? *I think* it is on the third floor, next to the "Manga" section. You need to insert 0,50 € to unlock the door that will lead you to the WC's. I don't think they clean them that often, so it's a rip-off!

Never tried them, but you may want or need to use them...

Mc Donald's WC's? You need to buy something there, at least the one close to the train station works like that. On the payment ticket, there is a number code (the numbers after the words CODE WC) you have to type in order to open the door that leads to the WC.

The public 'toilettes' on the streets (except it's urgent... *I think* it's 0,30 Euros).

it's like a...a...tropical rainforest!

Along your walk, your hike really, up and around the fort at the top of the hill on the eastern edge of the coast here...you'll pass this oasis of a waterfall. Yes, it's manmade, but on a warm, sunny day you won't care that it wasn't carved by nature, rather you will appreciate the spray which depending on the strength of the wind, may come close to soaking you.

Garden behind Russian Church (Êglise Russe)

by Elainehead

Some local families come here with their kids to get away from the noisy streets of Nice.

The Russian Church is very close to the main train station (Gare SNCF). From the train station, turn right on Avenue Gambetta, then turn left on Boulevard du Tzarewitch. The church is on the right side of this Boulevard.

Address: Avenue Nicolai II

How to get here: Bus 15 (After the train station avenue, the bus will turn right, get off on the very first stop).
