Close to the train station, but...

I spent 2 nights in the Trocadero hotel with 3 friends of mine.
Since we were travelling by train, we were very glad for such a short walk with heavy luggage, and our room was clean and confortable except that the bathroom window was locked and there was no exhaust fan...
Since the hotel is close to the train station an to the sexy shop and night club area, we did not feel so safe when coming back to the hotel late at night.
The hotel staff was not friendly at all.

Not the best Hotel

We booked into Hotel Trocadero at a bad time of year, during the Monaco Grand Prix and at the end of the Cannes Film Festival. For the price, it was much worse that what we got in other areas of Southern France, and was light years away from what we obtained in Madrid and Barcelona. Showerheads were broken, staff were not pleasant (particularly the gentlemen who worked the evening shift, who seemed to think we were severely impacting his shift of dozing at the counter when we needed to be let in the front door at a quite reasonable 10pm... I could go on, but I will leave it here.

The only positive I can say, is that at the time, the staff were dealing with a huge influx of young, obviously immature american tourists (in town for the film festival) who would have tested anybodies patience.

Horrible hotel

We had a most horrible experience at Hotel Trocadero. Firstly, amenities were seriously lacking. There was no soap or shampoo provided (not even the cheapo small bars of soap or disposable packets of shampoo), there was only ONE hairdryer in the entire hotel. I do not expect every room to have one, but at least have a few more at the reception counter! There was no housekeeping service as well. If you wanted your room cleaned, you have to pay for it. And towels are not changed unless you bring them down yourself to exchange for new ones.

The things mentioned above are still bearable, keeping in mind that this is not The Ritz or anything close to that. However, what really took the cake was the state of the hotel door and locks. The freaking door was so hard to open (which door needs the lock to be turned and PULLED at the same time?) and every day we spent at least 15 minutes grappling to open it when we came back. We were not the only ones to have problems with the doors. Many other rooms had keyholes which were well-worn and the paint around it was peeling, testimony to the struggling they went through as well. Then, on one of the nights, WE GOT LOCKED OUT of our room. The key just got stuck and refused to budge. The reception counter man used his master key and tried for over an hour and could not get it open. He was muttering and cursing all this time and actually blamed US for the jammed door. He also told us we would have to sleep in the hallway if that was the case!! Just the other night, our neighbour also could not get his door opened and had to get his help as well. We were so pissed off. How rude can someone in the service industry get?

Anyway to sum up, we were eventually put up at the hotel opposite (Hotel Frank Zurich which was much better in comparison) for that night, and the next day they managed to get our door opened so we moved back. Their explanation for why the door got stuck was totally unsatisfactory and had a lot of loopholes. Not wanting to kick up a fuss, we let the matter rest.

Unique Quality: Terrible counter service from the male receptionist who usually does the evening/night shift.

The woman receptionist in the daytime is quite pleasant and helpful.

No soundproofing in the hotel and it IS in a rather dodgy part of town so be prepared to hear sounds from the street. Sound is highly magnified at night.

The door locks are extremely difficult to open. Beware.

Minimal amenities. But the rooms(at least the 3 bed private ensuite ones) do come with an inbuilt kitchenette which has a microwave, stove, fridge and sink.

Nice budget hotel in Nice.

by FridgeMagnet about Hotel Trocadero

I spent 3 nights here in Feb 2008. It was a very reasonable €35 per night. They also added 70 cents per night tax. Not much but it's better not to be surprised when they charge it. I enjoyed my stay. It was clean and quiet and a short walk to Nice's main street. It's also quite close to the railway station. The street that it's on seems a little bit rough but I didn't have any problems.
