More about Hotel Westminster

Would return - probably this year

by TripAdvisor Member Velsheda

Have stayed at this hotel twice. Staff generally good, lovely breakfast room - very grand and old world. Excellent breakfast. Superb views from sea view room but slightly shabby. One wall socket in dangerous condition, particularly to a child. Worth watching out for this. Comfortable bed.

Slightly quirky at times. One guest who we were talking to at breakfast woke up to find that during the night while he had been asleep they had painted his bedroom door!

If you get bored you can always watch the hookers out in the street!

wedding bells in fantastic locaton

by A TripAdvisor Member

My daughters wedding reception was held in the Westminster Hotel in Nice. It was great! We had a reception on the terrace when we arrived from the church. then at six we had a beautiful dinner. The food was supberb. The wedding cake made by the resident chef was out of this world. The chef brought it in himself, all the lights were dimmed and the cake was ablaze with sparklers. A wonderful time was had by all. Most guests said it was the best wedding they were ever at. The band was a three piece with a girl singer reccommended by the hotel. They were excellent. My thanks again to everyone who made it a great day especially Sylvie who gave all the advice. Ann Maguire Dublin Ireland

Loved the Hotel Westminster in Nice, France

by A TripAdvisor Member

My son and I went to Nice for 3 nights/4days in May, 2006. I found the Hotel Westminster from the internet. Although it was not inexpensive, the hotel was truly great in every ways. The room we stayed was fabulous, on the sea front with a balcony. The hotel was very clean, the staff was very kind and helpful. The breakfast buffet was wonderful. The location was excellent, we walked to the hotel to/from the train station.
Tthere are tons of hotels in Nice, but I certainly would like to stay at the Westminster again on my next visit. Great weather we had was an extra bonus.
Thank you.

Ideally Located-A Bit Shabby Though

by TripAdvisor Member FairandBalanced

I was expecting a higher standard than what was received. Staff were friendly enough, especially as they had to change a few lightbulbs upon our request in the room. The bathroom was awful, with high high ceilings and weird old fashioned tiles that would remind one of an instution or mental hospital from the 50's. Balcony was very small, with someon's cigarettes on the balcony and in the drawer of our nightstand (the cleaning staff's stash perhaps????). The furniture in our room had seen better days, and the beach is free although it costs 18 Euros to have a chair and towel. What a ripoff. But that's the French Med! If you want beautiful beaches go to Barbados!

Terrific staff, best location, incredible history

by TripAdvisor Member LoveMyWife

My wife and I were only passing through Nice on our way to Monte Carlo, but were too tired to continue driving. We were unable to get a room at the Le Meridien and a couple of others when we were directed to this gem. We were incredibly lucky to find that they had an ocean view room with a queen bed available. While we expected to pay a lot, we were surprised that we were only being charged about 175 euros, which included a fantastic buffet breakfast served in a grand reception room. My wife was immediately enamored with this place and thrilled by its history and grandeur. I was somewhat apprehensive that its hsitoric character would be reflected in the accomodations. I need not have worried. Though not lavish, the rooms were quite clean and comfortable. The marble-clad bathroom was modern and had a great shower. Were we not due in Monte Carlo the next day we would have happily spent our vacation at this wonderful hotel.

Faded elegence

by TripAdvisor Member stevo27

The good:-
Friendly and helpful staff
Our room - a large deluxe with balcony and sea view (No 306)
A cosy bar with a brilliant head bar person

The bad:-
Nothing really

The ugly:-
The decor badly needs an update
No proper lounge area

We stayed in October 2006 and were really fortunate to have 8 days of warm sunshine. It did highlight the fact that there's not really anywhere to sit other than on the private beach at E15 per person per day - but then that's Nice for you.

The location is really good, the refurbished rooms are nice but shutters don't always work and there was no room safe! Unfortunately during our stay Nice council decided to re-tarmac the Promenade outside our window during the night! The hotel staff were very helpful and showed us rooms at the back if we wanted to move. Their standard rooms are very old fashioned but looked clean. There's an amazing junior suite at the back but the view's not brilliant.

Overall the hotel was very clean if a little shabby, the staff friendly the location perfect but it is quite expensive. I managed to negotiate a decent discount off the standard rates - you should try to as well.

We didn't try the restaurant but it looked very quiet and the menu didn't change during our stay but then if you can't find somewhere good to eat in Nice you're not trying.

Lovely hotel in excellent location

by TripAdvisor Member uk501

When I was picking a hotel to stay at for our trip to Nice I searched through all the reviews on trip advisor and this had some of the best, I can now see why. It is a friendly, spacious, clean hotel in the perfect location.

The main shopping/restaurant area is a 2 minute walk and the train station is only 5-10 minutes away up the road. The hotel is situated across the road from the beach and the airport is also a 10 - 15 minute journey by car costing 30 euros.

The rooms are big and clean with a large comfortable bed and lovely clean bathroom with a big tub! Thr rooms were cleaned everyday. Staff are friendly and happy to help and breakfast included a hot buffet which is served 7-11 in a large room downstairs or you could order it to your room. There is also a bar and restaurant in the hotel. Recomend you stay here if your looking for a good hotel in Nice which is centrally located.

Return visit

by TripAdvisor Member boucheboy

This was a return visit to this hotel and we would go back again!

We were allowed to book in early (11.00am).

We asked for a sea view and got one, our main mistake was that we didn't specify a balcony - so if you do want one specify this in advance.

At the moment there is a lot of construction work going on in Nice as a new Tram Way is built - this does not affect this Hotel at all unlike others in central Nice.

Taxi fare from airport about Euro 30 or bus Euro 4 which includes an all day bus pass.

Great location, poor rooms

by TripAdvisor Member suuper

Stayed at the Westminster for 5 nights early September. The rooms are in various standard and size. When we booked our stay we specificly asked for a non-smoking room, but the room smelled really bad. Asked to get another room, but the hotel was nearly full. Finnaly we got another room, but this was a standard room (we ordered superior). Ok, - the room was cheaper too (if only they had remembered this when we was going to check out. Be aware when signing the bill...). The staff is mainly friendly, but a bit slow service at brekfast... Overall the hotell is a bit shabby, and does not live up to 4 stars. Location is great thoug, right at the Promenade des Anglais. Short walk to the old city and sightseeing.

We're actually in Theoule-sur-Mer which is closer to Cannes. Looking for reaonably priced grocery stores along the French Riveria. Do they exist? H-E-L-P!

When on holiday in France I normally shop for foods at Super-U supermarkets, because there are really many of them even in small towns. I see there is one in Nice. In this webpage you will find the address and also a link to a map:

I searched Thoule-sur-Mer on the web and I have found there is a supermarket there. It is called Superètte de la Corniche d'Or, and is located in le

by Beausoleil

We favor Casino supermarkets. SuperU is good and so is Carrefour. In any downtown area, look for the sign saying "Epicerie" which is a small grocery store. The prices should be okay in all of these. If you buy local brands, the prices will be more reasonable. Looking for imported things that you use at home, will always be more expensive.

When all else fails, ask at your hotel where to grocery shop.

Hope you are enjoying your trip. Lovely area.

by jamesfmunro

The Riviera has the same supermarket prices as anywhere else in France. The advice above is good. If you have a car, you might want to visit Lafayette Gourmet at Cap 3000 in St Laurent du Var. Not the cheapest, but easily the best supermarket I've seen.

by nitrofan

Casino and Mini Casino are normally easy to find and offer reasonable value as do E Leclerc stores. Super U is cheap as is Lidle "ED" is another cheap place to shop
