Carros?

by MrsMurray

Hello! I was going to book a week at the hotel Mercure Marche aux Fleurs, but I've been quoted £250 for 2 people at the Kyriad Nice Carros. The pictures look good, but I don't know how accesible it is. Any comments on either hotel or on Carros itself would be most welcome.

Kyriad Group have a hotel in Nice near the port, and others, but Carros is miles outside on Nice Are you sure you have the name?

http://www.venere.com/hotel/index.php?htid=99894&action=location&lg=en

If this is the place you are 12km out of the town - the location is not for anyone wanting to spend time in Nice and the Riviera. Described as "an ideal stopover on the road to the Alpes, at the foot of the hilltop villages of Nice's outskirts". I think thats code for "need a car"

The Marche aux Fleurs on the other hand is totally the opposite. Its in the heart of Nice - just couldn't get a better location and a sea view. Its a totally different holiday.

Which I guess raises the question "what kind of holiday are you looking for" rather than which hotel.

Cheers
Andrew

Have booked Confort Hotel Roosevelt, as the old man prefers not to drive. Seems adequate, and a good price. We plan to look at stuff like Monaco, Italy etc, Any comments?

Right move in my view. You are centrally located and a short distance on foot from the shopping centre, the beach the bus and rail stations, and old Nice.

What now? Simple. Pick different locations you'd like to visit, plan to get out early morning, and travel back late afternoon to enjoy some time each day to explore Nice, before venturing out to a restaurant for the evening. Thats the theory anyway.

I don't know what you like but the "obvious" destinations each day include Monaco, Cannes, Antibes, Villefranche, St Paul de Vence, Menton, Ventimiglia and a day just for Nice itself. I can list another thirty if thats not enough.

Over to you.

Cheers
Andrew

Travel Tips for Nice

We had signed up for a van...

by Barbara2

We had signed up for a van tour of Nice and Monte Carlo. We hadn't paid attention to weather reports which apparently reported rain. The result was that we were the only ones on the tour. Our 'private' tour worked out well. The rain was just a bit drizzly. The sights were not diminished.

Of Walls and lampposts

by drgrcook

The French love their dogs and proudly promenade with them or carry them while kissing them behind the ears, maybe for extra nutrition! They look equally proud when their loved ones produce a huge pile of steaming poo, usually in the middle of the pavement (sidewalk).

I am the first to acknowledge the minority who carefully scoop up the offending pile for disposal elsewhere, but they always own lap-dogs not Rottweillers or St Bernards whose deposits are spread for several metres after a few pedestrians have looked at the beauty of the architecture rather than fixed their gaze on the ground.

My worst trick when wearing sandals was to not see a pile of mixed firm and runny excrement at the kerb-side, the swing of my foot scooped it up throwing half of it into the middle of the road and the rest between my toes and in and around my sandal. My wife said that I was not allowed into the apartment until I had had a shower...where do you get one?

While pontificating about dogs, how about the girl in front of us on a bus who had a rat on her shoulder. The much loved rodent spent its time disappearing down her clothing and coming up for air when it would view the passengers with interest from her shoulder before returning to its unseen activities below.

Dogs are commonly used by beggars, the younger or more fecund the better. Nothing is more guaranteed to attract the donations of ga-ga passers-by than a beggar accompanied by a mongrel with half a dozen pups. So many beggars use this ploy that I wonder what happens to the pups when they are past their sell-by date. They certainly do not go to the pet shops whose windows always display a number of cuddly pedigree pups (usually with noses that cannot function) in a fish tank full of shavings. The proprietors of these shops have one of two talents, either they train the dogs not to defaecate in the tank or they scoop each poo up as soon as they appear. After 5 years I am yet to spot a mistake.

GIANT MARBLES!

by lulujones

If you don't happen to see a game or 10 of "Petanque," a sort of marble game gone radioactive -- you aren't paying much attention to your surroundings. Normally, you see it all over the south of France. While I've only seen little old men play it in public, I think it's really fun to play (and I'm definitely not a man nor old) particularly while drinking a tasty alcoholic beverage. Any tasty alcoholic beverage will do for me, but many tend to prefer drinking "pastis" the French version of ouzo, a yummy licorice flavored melt in your mouth licqueur while playing this funky french game. Check out this site which will tell you everything you need to know about Petanque. i'm sorry, but i'm way too lazy to do this myself. http://www.petanque.org/ oh! i find that petanque sets are pretty cheap in france and makes a fun gift. of course it's way HEAVY so be prepared for some body building while lugging around your purchase.

Walk the Cap de Nice to Villefranche

by NiceLife

Choose a nice day (shouldn't be difficult) and comfortable shoes! Journey time two to three hours. Walk around the harbour and exit up back onto the lower road that follows the coast around Mont Boron ultimately to Villefranche via the Cap des Nice. Around Mont Boron you will see the frilly pink Chateau Anglais (now apartments) and other eccentric Victorian follies.

As you follow the Maeterlink road you pass more villas with astounding views out to sea and of the now shrinking harbour and The Chateau. If you are game for it, keep going full stretch around the coastal road untill you reach Villefranche. Along the way you will pass a roadside monument to Princess Grace of Monaco, actress Grace Kelly, who met her untimely end in a road accident above Monaco.

As you descend towards the charming village of Villefranche, you will be rewarded by fine views over the Cap Ferat.

Stop and enjoy a well-earned beer or coffee in Villefranche itself. Then to return to Nice, the TAM 100 bus (every 15 minutes) will whisk you back to the Gare Routiere in central Nice in fifteen minutes. Alternatively find your way to Villefranche railway station and (after an interminable wait) take the train two stops back to the Gare SNCF.

A BUNCH of Beauty

by lulujones about FLOWER MARKET

EVERY MONDAY the flower market takes center stage at Cours Saleya situated in Old Town Nice. If you love flowers and color, your nose, eyes and soul will get sensory overloaded here. in a good way! duh. flowers! kinda expensive for flowers due to its touristic location i guess. tho definitely worth a visit.
