Easter in Nice
by Muscovite
Hi,
Lost in planning: better to be in or out of Nice at Easter? Better to come before or after?
Not to come at all is not an option -), it's 0 C at home, the sky is grey, and so is the mood -(
What are pros and cons?
Is everything closed? Or open and crowded?
Any festivities around the fountain, apart from the usual CGT flags?
Thanks!

Thanks, Pedmar,
Coming April 9 and going April 24: any chance airport bus is off to the church service?

The time over Eastern is what is called here the high season. Not for locals as there is only Sunday and Monday a bankholiday. But the rest of Europe has holidays in this time and really the season starts. You will find out by yourself how easy it is to book a hotel room in this periode for you.
Everything ios open and running. Why you expect that there is no busservice? And for sure everything will be open.

Tmpaca,
Trying not to take things for granted and rather be safe than sorry

If you can delay your trip a few weeks, you'll be better off. Any time from May 1 and after, you'll find everything open, the weather pleasant, with no downsides. Since the tourist rush generally doesn't start until the beginning of June, May is excellent there, as well as the entire coast.
Re: Easter in Nice

Yes Mai is a good idea so you can be with thousands of others watching the Filmfestival in Cannes for two weeks and the Grand Prix de Monaco in the same time. Especially in this period hotels ask the double of the normal room rate or you must buy 4 nights even if you will stay only one. I'm talking about Nice!
Re: Easter in Nice

The Cannes Film Festival doesn't usually start until about May 12, so if you are in the area and gone by then, the prices should be normal. The Grand Prix in Monte Carlo takes place in late May.
Re: Easter in Nice

That's right:
Cannes from 11 to 22-05
Monaco from 25 to 29-05
Re: Easter in Nice

Thanks again for advice.
No downsides, sure, apart from rent and airfare going straight up.
I'vee been in Nice in May, indeed it's lovely.
But with the weather variable you never know if you are going to the beach or sightseeing, planning anything a bit difficult .

If it is only a question to be sure about the weather it would be better to come in June. Not crowded, mostly the weather is fine, all is open and there are for sure no CGT flags somewhere (but you can bring your own with you making a sitin at the fountain without any problems). Festivals starts and not only in Nice in July to the end of August.

Next time will come in June and with a flag -)
Travel Tips for Nice
Where to see foreign movies?
by ange_famine
If you are planning to stay a while in Nice and want to see a movie in your mother tongue, or a classic, you have three cinemas where most movies are not dubbed.
- The Cinema Rialto - 4 Rue de Rivoli (behind the Negresco): showing the last releases and foreign subtitled movies.
-Cinema Mercury - Place Garibaldi: showing new releases, foreign underground and new films, months after they have been taken off the schedules in other places.
-La Cinematheque - 3 esplanade Kennedy (under Acropolis, next to the bowling hall): showing classics, foreign films, cartoons...monthly program containing at least two themes + workshops or special nights.
You have to get a membership card for 1E, then the ticket is 2E. Really worth it!
The Beach by moonlight
by NiceLife
A warm summers night in Nice, the beach lit by moonlight and its reflections, let the gentle waters of the Med cool your feet.
Stroll the prom, head for the beach for a swim, or simply to sit out a while and soak up the atmosphere.
Les Gnocchis
by ange_famine
Okay, okay, maybe more italian than French, but you've got to try them.
Most restaurants serve them, either with red sauce, either with cream or cheese sauce.
They are basically small potato dumplings, quite without flavoured by themselves. Yet, though it is the sauce you select that conditions your experience, know that they should be soft, not chewy, and that as far as I'm concerned, them come best with rich cream and pepper sauce.
Like pasta, they are usually eaten on their own and don't come with meat or vegetables.
See tips on local restaurant to select a Nice place (see the pun?).
In-line skating
by NiceLife
The Promenade des Anglais is just made for in-line skating. A wide tarmac strip dedicated to skaters runs the 5km length of the prom out to the Airport. . You can also hire the requisite saftey pads for knees and elbows, though more experienced skaters will think you look a bit of a pussy. Its difficult to look cool padded like an ice hockey goalkeeper. You might want to don shades, and instead make a note of the address of the St Roch Hospital Accident and Emergency Department.
Nice hosts several competitive skating events, and a spectacular evening skate "Nice en Roller" in the summer You can hire skates by the hour, but bring your own shades.
The prime of Cote d'Azur ...
by Pavlik_NL
Watching from the castle hill in Nice, almost every day the sea is absolutely azure coloured. The water is really the reason why this is the Cote d'Azur. Along the coast at the cape that ends the castle hill, sharp rocks descend straight down into the Mediterrenean Sea. Climbing over the wall and laying down on the rocks one can hardly imagine that one is in the fufth largest town in France. Here, the only sound that reaches you is the breaking of waves. Surrounding you are the blue blue sea and natural rocks with some strange salt loving plants.
