Le Domaine de la Foret Blanche
by Djinn76
From 1675 till 2750m, the skiing area is made of two different valleys: Vars and Risoul. With 180km of ski slopes, you have enough to do for a week and can find many different type of slopes. Additionally, the landscape is awesome! The only drawback is that you only have a few chairlifts for a lot of ski-lifts : way less comfortable but we are here to do some sport, not to seat ;-)
The Black slopes
by Djinn76
Not too many black slopes on the domain, I would simply mention the ‘Epervier’ coming down from Peyrefolle (2457m), this is an easy one you could try to say you have done a black slope…
Now on the other extreme, if you are looking for a wall full of bumps, you would be more than happy with the “Vautours”. It is at least as steep as the “mur d’Avoriaz” I’ve discovered last year but not as width…
If you don’t feel confident enough for it, simply go to the right side and you would then enjoy a natural half-pipe between this black slope and the red slope called Plate de la Nonne.
Renting your equipment...

This is one of the main shops in France where you can rent your ski and ski shoes. An alternative to investigate could be “ski set”.
Since it is quite important to feel comfortable when skiing, I picked the “Golden category”. That was supposed to be the highest quality level (and the most expensive too)! Unfortunately it took 3 attempts before getting the right shoes from the Risoul’s shop. First ones were too small; I now have a blue nail I’ll probably loose. The next day, I went back to the shop, there was absolutely no problem to swap the shoes with what was left. The next shoes were ok but it took at least 15min to put them on, I’ve almost missed an appointment. Last ones were slightly too big but I was fed up to try something else and kept them for the rest of the week…
This is the first time that happens; usually I was pretty lucky (or better advised?), I’m now decided to buy my own ski shoes, at least they will be directly adapted to my feet (there is a thermal process which can fit the insole to your feet).
On the other hand, there is nothing to say about their skis, they were simply perfect!
My next ski trip is in one month. Unfortunately, I have already rented the shoes to the local Intersport: you can have a discount if you rent your ski/shoes 60/45/30 days in advance directly from their website… Hopefully I will be luckier this time!!
Risoul, another skiing trip!
by Djinn76
In 2004, that was the resort chosen by my previous university to go skiing... A friend proposed me to join, the trip was pretty cheap and I love skiing: I immediatelly agreed.
Risoul is located in the Southern Alps. Lots of French people from the South are skiing here, quite funny to hear their sunny accent when queing for the ski-lift!!...
Btw Risoul is one of the most sunny resorts (300 days of sun/year claimed by the marketing) but in january, I bet we were there at the wrong time : snowy, windy and quite cold!!
The life in this resort is pretty cheap and attract many students or young people. As a result, the night life is quite interesting... the skiing area is quite nice but don' expect the same infrastrucure as for example in Les Trois Vallees : here most of the lifts are plain ski-lifts...
