Travel Tips for Saint-Rémy-de-Provence

Bull Racing in St. Remy

by VeronicaG

The town was gearing up for its annual bull race when we dropped by one morning. Piles of iron gates lay on their sides, waiting to be set up as villagers did their day's shopping nearby.

St. Remy is known as a "town of tradition with a passion for bull racing...". If only we had been able to witness this unique spectacle. You sure wouldn't see that occuring in our neighborhood!!

If you look closely at the poster, you'll see that the bulls raced from September 25th-October 4th. Someone from town informed us that the race is only about ten minutes in length.

St. Remy has history . . . and tourists

by Beausoleil

"Old town is a separate world in St. Remy"

Go through the magic arch and you find yourself in a different world.

"New Town"

They pollard the plane trees in the autumn and by next summer, they will again shade the streets of St. Remy completely.

It's a little bare in the winter though . . .

"Van Gogh's asylum, very peaceful"

This is where Van Gogh was committed for a period in his life and they have renovated his room and opened it to the public. The church and cloisters are open and it is a very peaceful place to visit.

It is still a working asylum so you are not allowed free access of all areas.

It's a short walk across a field from Glanum so you can park there and walk to St. Paul de Mausole.

"Glanum"

Near the Roman town of Glanum (actually in the car park used for visitors to Glanum) you will find these two artifacts of the Roman era - a triumphal arch and a mausoleum. The arch was erected to celebrate the foundation of Glanum.

The mausoleum is one of the most impressive monuments of the Roman world. It is believed to honour the memory of Caius and Lucius Caesar, grandsons of the emporer Augustus, following their early deaths.
