Advice, staying just outside St Tropez....is it too much hassle?

by SWEETPOPPI

I hope to take my mom to St Tropez towards end of July but due to all the volcano action we have not booked anything yet. I am used to staying in luxury hotels here in Anerica but the prices are really high and I don't want to pay $700 for an average room. We were thinking of an apartment but I need to research.....or maybe staying in one of the towns nearby? I heard however that the traffic is awful but we won't be driving ( taxis only)are there any chic towns next to St Tropez where we could stay and is it worth while? It may be nice to be out of the hustle and bustle and just go to St Tropez for evenings.

Try Ste Maxime or Les issambres....both have ferries over to St Tropez during the high season which only take about 20 minutes - you wouldnt want to be stuck in a car/taxi going around the bay - it can up to 2 hours to do about 20 kms as the traffic is so slow. Otherwise, check out the small boutique hotels, le pastis is very hip - although not cheap it is in town and close enough to walk to the port/restuarants. My daughters favourite hotel. Taxi fares are not cheap so remember to cost this in if you stay out of towm. Hope this has helped. SMG

I really think you should be aware, that there is no such thing as "reasonable prices" in this region in July or August, the reason being there is very little available land, not many hotels and lots of people who will pay whatever it takes to get a place.

The traffic is not BAD it is APPALLING! and given the prices you will pay just to sit in the traffic I am astonished the cab drivers do not all drive Ferrari's!

The traffic is mostly due to the fact everyone seems to want to stick to some kind of inbuilt timetable, eg we all go home from the beach at 11.30 am we ALL go back to the beach at 3pm etc etc travel at odd times and its not too bad!

However it is worth knowing there are lots of little ferries that cross the bay from St Tropez to most towns up to about 8pm in the evening

Why not look at Hotel Giraglia is in Port Grimaud which is a lovely walled town, just across the bay from St Tropez the hotel is right on the beach, has its own pool and a very good restaurant! but I very much doubt you will get a room for less than €300 a night BUT it is right next to a ferry drop off point that goes to and from St Tropez!!!

Travel Tips for Saint-Tropez

Glitz and glamour with a touch of old world charm

Its always difficult to try to sum up a favourite thing about a destination. I love to travel, I don't yet get to do as much as I'd like, but that will come, but the times I am away I try to make the most of and see good things in any place, whether it be a big city or small village. I think you can always come away with something positive, even if you hated the place!

As I was on an adventure holiday, this was the first time I had the opportunity to do any kind of watersport and the warmth of the Med was perfect for that. The backdrop wasn't bad either with the port of St. Tropez on one side, St. Maxime on the other with the Alps maritime in the background. I miss the warm evenings, the good food and wine and the great company, considering I had not met these people before the holiday, it was just a fantastic time. The town of St. Tropez could sometimes be rude and arrogant, but nonetheless walking round the narrow streets, seeing the view of the bay you can't fail to be impressed. I will always remember watching all the yachts return from the open sea on a Saturday afternoon, there were literally 100s of them. It was just an impressive sight.

Place de Lices

Cenral to Saint Tropez is the dusty square populated with plane trees on their last legs, the place de Lices. Around it , cafes ideal to sit out in and enjoy watching your holiday spending money evaporate.

Luxury at its best

I went to St. Tropez to find accommodation in my way back from Provence. I never expected to be impressed so much by St. Tropez. But it got to me with the perfect harbor, with the rich boats and the luxury they emanate, just one meter from you, the nice sunsets, the beach, restaurants, shops and the old gendarmerie we all laughed at when looking at Funes' movies.

St Tropez

St Tropez is a famous town in France. It is the meeting point for famous and rich people partying on their private yacht. This is the place to be if you wanne be seen.
Everyone here is more expensive than in other cities around.

I've also read in a tourist guide that St Tropez has a special light. And I don't know if it's because I've read that but I thought that the light was warmer and more orange than usual...

I've been here several times but haven't felt really attracted to this city, maybe because everything looks a bit superficial to me. But I was there to welcome 2004 under some fantastic fireworks ! What a great memory for it was !
We were just standing on the pier and had the impression that those fireworks were lighted especially for us, it was right over our heads. I have never seen fireworks from such a short distance, it was really special...

That's a great start into 2004...
