Haute Provence History
by firechick
Walking around in town, there are so many old walls, buildings and fortifications to take notice of. Here and there are markers to tell about the history of the place. Markers to show where someone died from the french Resistance movement in WWII, plaques to show when the citadelle was built, how old the rocks are which make up the Rocher de la Baume which makes a stunning and dramatic backdrop for some of the oldest buildings in the city.
Escalade (Climbing)
by firechick
There is rock climbing on the cliffs in this area - notably Le Rocher de la Baume. Climb here in tourist season and you will have quite an audience watching you from the town above! ;-) There are over 100 routes on this cliff, and there are other cliffs in town with easier routes as well. Sport climbing on cliffs - bring the normal gear - quick draws, rope, climbing shoes, harness etc.. It gets hot here, so climb early ams or in the late afternoon in summer.
Ancient Town Built into the Cliffs
by firechick
A friend tipped us off that we should visit Sisteron on our drive from Chamonix to Cassis. We spent a night and a day visiting this town.
Sisteron is an ancient place (over 4000 years old!) in the Alps de Haute Provence. It is called the 'gateway' to Provence and has a pretty interesting history as a fortified town.
From it's high cliffs (the other side fo this photo, actually), rise the fortification of the Citadelle. This magnificent structure built into the solid rock has guarded the town through the ages - though not always perfectly - the town changed hands many times over the years.
It was founded by Celtic Gauls, then taken over by Romans. It was pillaged in the 11th century, and suffered greatly from Plague epidemics (several times) in the 1400s and 1500s, and then in the 1700s Typhus again decimated the town. It regained strength again only in the 1800s.
The Citadelle - Views of and from
by firechick
Hundreds of French resistance fighters were kept locked up in the Citadelle from 1939-44. They escaped through a daring plan, just before the Citadelle was bombed by Allied forces in '44. It was a target since it was used by the Germans to station troops. Parts of it had to be rebuilt from original plans by local stone workers.
