Short but Sweet Stay
When we went to see the Tour de France in 2004, our base for the stages in the Alps was the charming town of Aix-les-Bains. The town center is fairly small and there is a nice plaza that includes the Hotel de Ville, a charming area covered with trees under which sit tables and chairs for leisure, and a small bandshell. On the north side of the plaza is the stylish and attractive Hotel Astoria.
We didn't do a whole lot in town since during the days we were ither riding our bikes or watching that day's Tour stage. We did get a chance to walk around the city centre the first evening we arrived and took in life in a resort town in the Alps. Shop owners were very friendly and forgiving of our hideous attempts to speak French. Several restaurants and cafes along the pedestrial Place Pietonne make for a relaxing time sipping a cappaccino or eating gelato on a warm summer's evening.
