Explore Old Town: Just follow the River Thiou
by iNorv9
Many of the buildings in Old Town Annecy haven't been changed for hundreds of years, giving it a nice rustic feel. The emerald green River Thiou often lined with blooming flowers serves as a good guide as you pass among plenty of little shops and some great traditional architecture.
Bottom-line: The heart and soul of the town, no trip is complete without a little stroll through its cobblestone streets
Lac d'Annecy
by Lilasel
The Lake of Annecy is the second largest lake in France, after lac du Bourget, except for the French part of lac Léman (Lake Geneva).
It is known as "Europe's cleanest lake" because of strict environmental regulations introduced in the 1960s. It is a popular tourist destination known for its swimming and water sports.
The lake was formed about 18,000 years ago at the time the large alpine glaciers. It is fed by many small rivers from the surrounding mountains and from a powerful underwater source, the Boubioz, which enters at 82 m depth.
Beautiful City with lakes and canals
by firechick
Annecy is a place we often take friends or go to when the weather is bad in Chamonix (where we live) and you can't see the mountains. It's about a one hour drive from Chamonix on the autoroute. Also not far from Geneva if you are staying there.
It is a beautiful city, even if it's raining! It has a very medaeval feeling to it, and the beautiful canals that run next to buildings here with their crystal clear water are relaxing to watch. Swans and ducks float around in the canals, and several restaurants have seating along them. There is a large lake, and if the sky is clear you can see it ringed by mountains. Boat tours of the lake run all the time in summer.
It is the capital of the Haute Savoie department (74) of France and has a number of lovely old monuments, chateaus and churches to visit as well as a very nice shopping district.
