Day Trip to Annecy from Lyon

by shimin

Hi, my friend and I want to make a day trip to Annecy from Lyon on either 13th or 14th September, but we've encountered a few problems.

I'm not sure what the first statement is driving at because I didn't choose any seating or anything like that, and I believe the 2nd statement is saying that the train basically works like any normal metro: you can get on the train, but there is no guarantee of a seat. Is this right?

2. Also, even after ignoring all these and trying to buy the ticket, all my cards get rejected with no reason except that they can't do a follow-up on why my cards are rejected. I've already booked 4 other TGV train trips on the same site with no problem, so I'm not too sure what's going on here. The only possible reason I could think of is that TER trains only accept European bank cards like the iDTGV trains. Is this true?

3. Is the Lyon-Annecy train usually crowded at this time of the year? Should I just try to buy the tickets at the Lyon train station on the same day? Is it hard to get a seat?

Thanks in advance!

1. You cannot reserve seats on TER trains even if you want to, except for large groups. TER trains are local trains, not quite like the metro but the same general idea. There is no point in buying a ticket in advance as the fare is the same every day, every train unlike the long-distance trains. Just get to the ticket office a few minutes before departure and use the machines or the human at the ticket window to buy your round-trip tickets.
2. No idea, sorry. Seems odd though. Take some cash with you in case your card is rejected by the system at the station.
3. Crowded or not, there is no guarantee of a seat on any TER train in France. As the train starts from Lyon, you would be unlucky if it was absolutely full.

1- right
2- I suppose this is the answer
3- On local trains, people arrive late. If you arrive 10-15 minute in advance, you should be very unlucky not to get a seat.

Travel Tips for Annecy

L'église Saint-Francois

by Klod5

Desolation

This area looks off the beaten track. I can't remember if we did walk here but it sure looks nice! We did at one point go for a long walk alongside the lake, and found a great spot to have quiet picnic. There were very few people around other than us and a couple of French women, sunbathing topless. If there is a heaven, this might have been it

Gorges du Fier in Lovagny, 10 km from Annecy

by iNorv9

For a good half-day trip outside of Annecy, check out the Gorges du Fier. Here you can experience the natural beauty of the gorge on a pathway literally anchored to the sheer rock face about 88 ft/27 m above the Fier river below. It's not a long walk through the gorge itself, only about 0.5 km round trip, but once you exit the gorge there's an open area next to a larger river that makes a good rest/swimming spot.

Open: March 15 - October 15.

Cost: No more than 5 euro.

Bottom-line: Provides an interesting perspective of the precipitous gorge walls that you'll rarely find elsewhere. Highly recommended if you have the time and transportation.

Between Lyon and Chamonix

by albert34

I spent 2 days in Annecy coming from Chamonix to Lyon.It is just in the middle.Although I went by bus from Annecy to Lyon airport in 2 hours.
The Old Town is very picturesque with the canals, flowers, cobblestone streets...But ii's usually crowded, above all that June 21,la Fête de la Musique.
A piece of advise:Rent a bike to go around the lake.
