good money exchange place

by monicarc

looking for a place to exchange us dollars in annecy. thanks

Re: good money exchange place

Outside of Paris where I know of several places you can exchange currency at 2%-3%, ATMs will probably offer the best exchange value as withdrawals from French bank or post office ATMs cost nothing. Next of course is what your bank charges you for out of network ATM withdrawals. In addition, either Cirrus or Plus will take 1% of the exchange as an international currency conversion fee.

Most French banks offer a currency exchange service but the commissions can be very high.

ATM's won't work for us, travelling with people dead set on using travelers checks (plus I had a bad experience with an ATM in europe in the past). Looks like I will look for a bank to change $.

Interesting about the Travelers checks.

You might have some difficulty exchanging them as many merchants no longer accept them (too risky). The rate of exchange for travelers checks is even more expensive (higher commission and fees) than that of cash if you can find some place to exchange them.

You seemed determined to carry travelers checks so my advice is carry some cash as a backup.

I haven't used travellers cheques in France since 1997. It was getting hard to cash them, even then.

Travel Tips for Annecy

Sunken steamer

by Martinewezel

Annecy once had it's own paddle steamer, "Le France". Built in 1909, it became the symbol of the lake during the Belle Epoque. In the sixties, the ship stopped sailing while the cost became too high. Also it was a terrible polluter; it needed more than a ton of charcoal / day. The ship started it's second life as café- theatre at the shore. But a certain morning in 1971 it seemed dissapeared. Divers found the ship at the bottom of the lake, along L'Impérial Palace. It still remains there, at a depth of 42 meters and is now a play ground for divers, bringing up remains. There is a whole room in the Castle-museum, dedicated to the history of this ship.

by Klod5

Boat tour

by Martinewezel

There are several boat companies which provide short or long tours on the lake. We prefered a 30 minutes tour in a small wooden boat from "Bateaux Dupraz". The captain is also the guide and he stops his boat here and there to give info about how the lake became the purest one in Europe. He also shows who is living in the prestigious dwellings around the lake. Call it "glance at a Vip's backyard" tourism. It was a very entertaining boat trip.

Jardin de L'Europe

by Goner

There is a beautiful park that runs along the lake. You can find a bench that give you a great vista of the lake and the mountains. Lots of trees and a fountain make for a cool respite in August (They also have a public restroom).

A pretty place for a weekend escape

by Kiriel

Annecy is a gorgeous town less than an hours drive from Geneva. This pretty town sits on the edge of a beautiful lake with stunning views of the mountains.

The water is incredibly clear, and the town is wonderfully picturesque. If you are in the Geneva and Rhone Alps region, you simply MUST have Annecy on your list of places to see!
