"The gateway to the Franch Alps"
Annemasse, a French border city with a pop. of roughly 80'000 some 10 km SE from international Geneva, has a stoid local French working-class character. It is host to a twice weekly large open-air market on Tuesday and Friday mornings. An important effort was made during the last decade to embellish the town center, which used to be quite an ugly combination of downrun old buildings. It also has a local airfield with hard runway, a number of 3-star hotels, a variety of restaurants, many shops and supermarkets, and an important regional rail and bus station: the gateway to the Haute-Savoie resorts such as Evian and Thonon, Chamonix and the Mont-Blanc, Annecy etc.
