A lovely mountain village.
To visit Mont Blanc it is most sensible to stay at Chamonix. A small town very well geared for tourists, and surprisingly well priced.
Architecture is interesting. Mountains surrounding Chamonix are breathtaking!

We have a day to stop over in Chamonix, France and wanted to know if anyone knew of a particularly nice place to stay there? Since we only have time for a single day stopover, anyone know how long it takes to ride the cable cars up mont blanc?
There are no cable cars up Mont Blanc. There is one up the Aiguille du Midi which is probably what you are thinking of. I think if you take the time to read any of the Chamonix pages on the VT site, this will answer your questions since that is the top tourist site in the entire town and everyone has made a tip about it. :-)

In 2004 I read an article in the Sunday Telegraph about an “Anglo-French conflict” in Chamonix, due to an alleged “invasion anglaise”.
The scenario it depicted was rather ugly, with the locals resenting badly because British buyers had sent house prices skyrocketing, local businesses were bought and run by Brits for Brits, restaurants or tea-rooms had staff who spoke no French at all, taxi drivers complained that they did not hear French spoken any more in the centre of town.
When I finally managed to spend a holiday in Chamonix, I found that although the town is full with visitors of many nationalities, it still is very French, with the majority of holiday homes still owned, and happily used, by the French. And whenever my little French failed me and I asked “parlez-vous anglais ou l'italien?” I always met people who could speak English and did not seem displeased at doing so.
I don’t know if the situation has changed in the last few years, or if the journalist had very much exaggerated the problem. Maybe both.
The pub you see in my picture was founded by an Irish but now belongs to a French, who has maintained the pub’s Irish name. It may be evidence that locals and foreigners can get along well.
Skipass Cham'ski gives an opportunity to spend one day in Italy in Courmayeur. Just 50 minutes by car, trip in tunnel under Mont-Blanc and you are in Italy. At Plaut Checrouit there are quite nice red slopes which can be attractive even for good beginners. But the most interesting slopes are on the north side, towards Zerotta. Here in some mountain restaurant take a glass of hot wine and admire fascinating Mont-Blanc.
I also spoke with Simon of MOUNTAIN DROP OFFS. Don't let the name scare you: it really is a transfer bus service! I contacted them 1 week before my requested pick-up date from Chamonix to Geneva. After a day or two, they contacted me via phone and email, saying they also had a seat available for a Saturday early morning pick-up. The price they quoted me was also EUR 40, but since I already had a seat reserved with another service, I didn't ride with them.

L'Aiguille du Midi, known as "The Needle of the South" in English, provides an excellent location for viewing Mont Blanc (15,780 ft/4 810 m) ,and the French Alps. The famous Telepherique (Gondola) de l'Aiguille du Midi transports you along an impressive ascent of over 2 800m in about 20 minutes. Once at the top (12,604 ft/3 842m) there are several panoramic viewing platforms where you'll be able to take in the tremendous raw beauty of the Alps.... The landscapes are truly amazing; Mont Blanc appears to be so close that you could just reach out and touch it.
Cost: A round trip ticket is about 35 euros.... not cheap, but very worth it. The gondola is open from May to September, except in cases of bad weather.
Duration of Visit : Allow for 2-4 hours depending on crowds.
Quick Tip: The best time to visit is between 7-8am, when the lighting is ideal and the crowds are small.
Bottom-line: This is a easily a MUST SEE for anyone traveling to Chamonix.
