Transport Geneva Airport to Chamonix

by danijels

Hello

Can anyone give some tips on transportation options from Geneva Airport to Chamonix (and back)? We are 6 people and the trip will be in winter season with all the skiing equipment that goes with it. Ideally, we would like a taxi mini van or something similar, but if there are organized busses, that might also work. Are there any web sites that would allow us to book something like that in advance? And what should we expect a buss fare or a mini van price to be?

Thanks

There are about 10 or 15 airport transfer companies operating trips from GVA to Chamonix in ski season ... I made a web page listing various ways to get to Chamonix - http://www.alpsadventures.com/Alps_Adventures/Access_and_Transport.html lists some options, or try Google. They all have websites and you for van transfers you MUST book in advance.

Travel Tips for Chamonix-Mont-Blanc

The old town

by Martinewezel

Chamonix has been totally destroyed by a fire in 1885, so you'll need to search very carefully to find something of the original town, like the old Saint-Michel church here.

Luckily Chamonix has been nicely rebuilt . The centre is still very charming and cosy. Especially the area around the turbulent river (more pictures soon in my travellogues).

Be prepared...

by Maggies

Be prepared for any weather conditions. The picture above was taken in July and the weather can change really quick when you're up on 4000 meters. One minute it's beautiful and sunny and the next thing you notice is a snow storm. So, you better take some warm clothing.

If you have a car you are very lucky

by AlexanderRu

If you have a car and the weather doesn't allow to ski Annecy is the place you must visit being in Chamonix.
This place is the second Venice with its canal and houses standing in the water. There is the medieval castle (former prison). Pictures of the prison washed by canal from 2 sides are among top 10 of most known European sightseeing photos.
There is a beautiful lake with swans. You can sit on the numerous benches and relax.
And eveything is only in 1 hour drive from Chamonix without the need to cross Montblanc.

The only bar in the area

by Martinewezel about Bar du Plan de l'Aiguille

It's especially the location of this chalet which makes from the bar a unique place. The view is stunning, both in good and bad weather.

The café also has it's souvenir's corner. They sell T-shirts, cow bells, snow balls, ballpoints... the usual knickknacks. But... contrary to the "Companie du Mont Blanc shop down at the cable car station, the prices here are cheaper.

In this tip I included a sunny photo and a snow photo, both taken in Summer.
I also uploaded a small video of this bar, made in August 2009. It was very sunny then. However, you'll see the parasols fluttering very hard. At this elevation, a sweather is always necessary. We just had a coffee to warm up a bit.

Paragliding

by ringleader

We didn't get a chance to do it, but we understand that you can catch a ride with a professional paraglider. The views are supposed to be fabulous. We spoke to someone who did this in the Swiss Alps and they felt it was worth every franc!
