More about Les Gorges de Diosaz

Price/quality : 5 stars !

by chooooocolat_moose about Hotel Le Chamonix

We arrived for a mountaineering holiday in Chamonix with the whole basketbal team. Booked the hotel online, which resulted in friendly back and forward chatter.

Hotel served us breakfast outside on the grass, because we were too early. They provided the 4 parents with all necessary accomodation for the kids.

This hotel is only rated 2 stars, but it felt a lot more due to fantastic personnel and atmosphere.

It is just right opposite of the chamonix travel information board, so in the MIDDLE of the city ! We paid between 60 and 90 for the rooms, a bargain ! Personnel : multi languaged AND friendly
Location : in the middle of Chamonix
Parking : because it is in the middle of Chamonix, there is only room for 3 cars, not much...But 100m away, there is a parking place.

From Nice to Chamonix

by potokmo

Me and my wife will fly to nice for 7 days.
We will arrive in the morning to Nice, take the rented car and want to make a circular trip to the french Alps and to be back in Nice on the fourth day in the evening.
We thought getting to Chamonix.
Do you think it is too far away? My wife cannot walk too much, so the most will be driving the car.
I would be grateful to receive an itinerary for the trip, and all the recomendations you have.

The distance would seem too great to be able to make anything of your day. Unless you start very early in the morning and do an overnight or two in Chamonix, it really is not worth it. Of course if you take the 4 days for the round-trip it is viable. Viamichelin.com gives 2 itineraries.

1) 530 kms, but for 7 hours driving time,

2) 684 kms but only 6h30 driving as most of this route is on motorways plus 120 euros extra in tolls as compared to 72 euros the other way

My husband and I and friends are planning on driving from Macon, France to Aosta,Italy via A40 thruough the mountains using Mont Blanc tunnel in mid October of 2010. We are wondering what the road conditions might be like during that time frame and how long a drive it is. Also, what are the tolls associated with such a drive. We are actually leaving straight from Paris and are hoping to make the trip in one day. Is this feasible, and how long would you anticipate it taking?

Travel Tips for Chamonix-Mont-Blanc

14th of July

by Martinewezel

Just as in any other french city, France's national holiday is a feast.

Flags are put out everywhere , a military parade in the afternoon , a bal populaire at night and a big firework at the end.
And in Chamonix, the firework is worth the wile!

Le Tour

by PolinaS

There is Le Tour next to Argantier, it is also available by skibus or train (railway station Vallorcine). A ski-lift from Vallorcine will take you up to Aiguillette des Poselles. Here you will find wide snowy fields which give opportunity to ski just for pleasure.

Street Signs (for the North American Driver)

by firechick

This is just a tip for those of you who are used to driving in North America and who rent a car to get around in Chamonix (or other parts of France).

It drove me crazy when I first came here that I could rarely see a street sign to tell me what I was driving on. This is true in large and small towns. The motorways are labelled quite well, but other streets were not. I would go mad trying to find out where I was.

Later I realized, all you need to know is where you are GOING and the name of the town you are IN and then some town names you will pass THROUGH on the way. The theory around here is, tell people how to get where they are wanting to go -- not the name of a random street they will never need to see again. So, keep your eyes on the signs at intersections!

If you see a sign saying "Toute Directions" - that is a sign for leaving the town you are in. It will eventually lead to other signs that point to the motorway or to another large city.

To get to the downtown area of any town, just follow the signs for "Centre Ville".

At every intersection (often a roundabout) there will be signs indicating how to get to the next nearby city or cities.

It ends up being easy to find your way around as long as you know the name of where you are going, and the names of some of the towns in between.

This is very different from driving in North American cities, where the only times you see town names are on the exits of Freeways!

I admit that the first time I saw the glacier I was a little disappointed because the final half seems like a road. The glace is covered with soil and stones. But there are a number of paths for hiking and it's wonderful if the weather is good.
