La ville profite de sa grande proximité avec la ville de Genève. La moitié de la population environ est composé de fonctionnaires des organisations internationales installée à Genève (ONU, OMS, BIT, OMC etc.), ce qui fait de Ferney-Voltaire la commune connaissant la plus forte concentration de fonctionnaires internationaux au monde. Cette population à fort pouvoir d'achat connaît un taux de renouvellement très important, qui favorise le maintien des loyers à des niveaux très supérieurs à la valeur des biens immobiliers à la vente.

La ville attire également les populations suisses dans ses marché et supermarchés. Le Lycée international est un établissement original, qui, quoique public et scolarisant normalement les élèves de l'arrondissement, comporte des classes dites "internationales" gérées de façon privée où les enfants des fonctionnaires internationaux travaillants à Genève peuvent recevoir des cours dans leur langue maternelle (Anglais, Allemand, Espagnol, Italien, Néerlandais, Suedois) et préparer le Bac Op. Internationale.

Ces dernières années ont connu une exacerbation des tensions autour du devenir de la ville et du canton. Le développement inexorable de Genève tend à l'intégration complète de Ferney-Voltaire au sein de l'agglomération genevoise. Cette intégration se manifeste notamment par la multiplication des immeubles d'habitation sur le territoire de la commune, renforcée encore par la crise immoblière que traverse Genève depuis quelques années. Le projet du "Triangle d'or" vise à intégrer plus fortement la zone frontalière de l'aéroport à travers l'installation de zones d'activité économiques dans les bois. Il est soutenu par la municipalité mais suscite de vives oppositions dans la population, dont une partie reste attachée à la dimension de village de Ferney-Voltaire. L'arrivée, à terme, du tramway reliant directement Ferney au centre-ville de Genève devrait cependant parachever la transformation de Ferney en un simple quartier de Genève. Voltaire acheta une maison près de Genève qu'il nomma « Les Délices » et en 1758, il acheta le Château de Ferney.

Voltaire bought a house close to Geneva that he named «The Delights» and in 1758, he bought the Castle of Ferney.



Voltaire changea sa propriété en une ferme productive. Il acheta les meilleurs outillages agricoles et engagea des gens pour travailler à la ferme. Il fit aménager un verger et planter beaucoup d'arbres.

La ville se trouve à la frontière suisse et fait partie de l'agglomération de Genève, sur le bord nord-ouest de l'aéroport international de Genève. Elle est située sur la RN 5 qui relie Genève (et au delà la rive française du Lac Léman) à Dijon en passant par le col de la Faucille.
