Train travel from Grenoble to Geneva.

by THEHED

I am planning to visit my in-laws who live in Grenoble. I also wish to travel from Grenoble to Berlin to visit an old high school chum. I will be traveling over the Christmas/New Years holiday. I am looking to travel to Berlin on Dec. 31. Here is my question:

Will the train schedule from Grenoble to Geneva be the same on the holiday Dec 31, 2009 as a regular Thursday? Are there different "holiday" train schedules?

I am reluctant to book flights, until I am sure I can get to Geneva in time.

December 31 isn't a public holiday - although evening schedules can be disrupted: 1 January is. European trains generally run according to different schedules on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays, and on public holidays such as New Year's Day, they run according to the Sunday timetable. You can check train timetable on http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

There will be a timetable change in the middle of December. You can check out http://www.voyages-sncf.com/billet-train in November for precise information on your query.

You should also consider flying from Lyon to Berlin. There is an hourly bus service from Grenoble to Lyon Airport (not sure how it works on 2009/12/31).

OK, there are also some alternatives:
- Grenoble -> Geneva by bus
http://www.vfd.fr/horaires_VFD_AEROCAR_2009.pdf

- by train, 4 / day (Regional express train), 2 hours, 23 Euros (2nd class)

- There are no Grenoble -> Berlin direct flights. I think you'll have fly from Lyon St Exupery (code LYS), there is a ~ hourly bus shuttle from Grenoble to Saint Exupery (Satobus)

Téléphérique Grenoble-Bastille

by Lilasel

Since 1934, the Bastille site has been linked to the city by what at the time was Europe's first cable-car in a town centre. The short breathtaking ride in the "Eggs" sweeps visitors up to the viewing platforms, discovery trails around the fortifications, recreation areas, café, restaurant, footpaths and fitness circuits.

La vasque olympique (the Olympic bowl)

by JLBG

The Olympic bowl was ordered to the famous sculptor César. It was lit on February 6th 1968 by skating champion Alain Calmat. It has now been transferred close to the Town Hall and Parc Paul Mistral and used as a fountain.

Maison de la Culture

by JLBG

The "Maison de la Culture" also named the "Cargo" was built in 1967-68 and renewed in 2004. The architects were André Wogensky and Antoine Stinco with Alain Richard for the interior.

It was inaugurated in 1968 by famous writer André Malraux who was then "Ministre des Affaires Culturelles" The "Maisons de la Culture" have been created in France since 1960 in order to democratize culture and bring it to the people.

It stands on a bare ground which enhances it. It is a great white building with black superstructures, the contrary of the surrounding mountains. It looks almost like a vessel, hence it nickname of "Cargo". Wogensky got a great deal of its inspiration from his master Le Corbusier. The frame is made of raw concrete. Most faces are blind and the few openings have sun breakers.

Extension du parc Paul Mistral

by Klod5
