Weather and forecast
by vinc_bilb
Grenoble "benefits" from an atypical climate, with an amplitude and variations of the highest in France. While in winter, the temperature can fall very low, in summer the city undergoes one of the strongest hot season of the country. The surrounding mountains form a huge washbasin, in which the heat becomes sometimes heavy, because of the lack of air.
We can have long periods of sunshine ... compensated with strong precipitation which have difficulty in moving.
Weather Grenoble : Free website for Grenoble and its area:
meteo-grenoble.com
This site (the best in my view) gives reliable weather forecast for Grenoble and the Dauphiné region (ski resorts, ...)
A link to the Paris website allows you free access to a complete set of weather information for the whole country. Now, you can understand why the city is empty during the hot sundays: the residents of the city (called Grenoblois) are looking for fresh air around (in the mountains, lakes...).
A 20°C temperature variation (+ or -) in 1 or 2 days is not exceptional... Adapt your packing list according to that !! (see pic1, pic2 from www.meteo-grenoble.com)
Grenoble Tip
by some_clown
As you can see on this satellite picture, Grenoble is surrounded by mountains, and that's why it gets so cold in the winter and so hot in the summer. The city is at the cross-roads of 3 valleys. The one going towards the West takes you to Lyon and it's region. The one on the East side leads to Chambery and the whole Savoie. The one in the South leads to Valence and the southern Alps.
The Town Hall, bronze sculpture by Etienne Hadju

The Town Hall, bronze sculpture by Etienne Hadju, 1967
This sculpture of Etienne Hadju, "formes min?rales abstraites" (abstract mineral shapes), blooms in the center of the patio of the l'H?tel de Ville, in a granite fountain, posed on the mosaic of Gianferrari which covers the ground of the patio. From a shape that the artist multiplies, a concrete image takes form without never being identified with its elementary component. Curved forms, folded up on themselves seem to contain tensions which evoke all the energy maintained in a "mineral flower" about to hatch. This sculpture creates itself progressively its own space medium with its development. One finds the preoccupation with a perfection of the artist in the treatment of the matter, which he wants beautiful, polished and dense.

This old style Merry-go-round used to come here (in Place Grenette, in the center of the city) around Christmas, for a fee weeks. It seems that now, it stays from onr Christmas to the other ! I suppose there are enough customer for that !
