Lyon Holiday

by specialsupercar

We are visiting Lyon in Late July,I have a young child aged 6 is there anywhere in Lyon for me to take him. He won't want to visit all the museums etc.

Re: Lyon Holiday

Hi,
Since it's pretty hot in Lyon at that time I think that it would be fun for him to go to the Parc de la tête d'or. It's like this huge parc with animals and loads of other exciting things to see.

We visited in May and found the Roman aqueduct ruins and amphitheater delightful. They are located a short walk from the basilica on the hill, which can be reached by a public funicular ( steep cog railway ). The site is park-like, was very clean and a great open space for an energetic, inquisitive child or adult:-). We loved Lyon!

Travel Tips for Lyon

Attend a Puppet Show

by hquittner

There are three troupes presenting puppet shows daily in Lyon. One is located in a small theater in Old Lyon and the others are in other parts of the city. We attended an afternoon show at the Daniel Streble troupe. After the show we went backstage and were shown the workings and looked at an enormous number of puppets of ages from ancient to new. These are what are called hand puppets and thus are limited in movement but that makes them much more creative. It is as easy for adults to enjoy the shows as it is for children, maybe easier.

TGV trains

by Fam_Stoica

Lyon has two TGV stations located in the city center (Part-Dieu and Perrache) and one station at the airport.

Lyon is just 2 hours from central Paris, with trains running every 30 minutes (almost 30 trains a day), 3 hours from Lille, 5 hours from London by Eurostar, and there are also TGV services to/from Chambery, Annecy, Marseille and Brussels.

The TGV station at Lyon Saint Exupery Airport facilitates air-rail connections, especially with Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport and the cities of Annecy, Chambery, Grenoble, Lille and Marseille, putting Lyon within easy reach of the main cities in France and Europe.

Traboules and inner courtyards in Lyon (part two)

by sandrathebest

The Hotel "Cour des loges" (in Saint Jean quarter) is a master piece of old and modern architecture, as the inner courtyard was roofed and became a lobby, and the old apartments became hotel rooms.
(A painted wall near by pays homage to that masterpiece)
Even if you are not rich enough to stay there, you should enter for a visit. Just see that you're dressed properly.

In the presqe'ille quarter, enter the beautiful inner courtyard of the "beaux art" museum
(Even if you don't plan to visit the museum, the courtyard is free).
and the inner courtyard of the printing museum (just behind the MacDonald on DeBrest st.)

View over Lyon

by OrlandoBR

After you take the funicular up the Fourvière hill, see all of Lyon and maybe the Alps (on a sunny day) from behind the Basilique - it's gorgeous.

A travelogue will feature the 180° panorama (coming very soon...)

"Quai de Guingettes"

I visited Lyon for a few days in July 2005, right in the middle of the Quai de Guingettes, a 10 day party based along the banks of the Saone. The festival runs from 12 am to 12 pm every day and has stalls and sideshows running for a length of 2 kilometres. Combining boat trips with African and Carmagaise stalls, the festival has lots to offer, and interestingly, doesn't seem to attract many non French tourists. The residents are incredibly friendly - compared say to Paris - and invited us to join them for a drink. Most don't speak English although will help you as you struggle with your pigeon French.

"The Electric Bikes"

Amazingly, we were able to rent electric bikes for 1 euro per hour and cycle up and down the Rhone and Saone.
