We enjoyed the Parc de la Tete d'Or, but that was in the summer. There is a deer park and many types of plants along with a cactus enclosure with very interesting plants. Lyon also has a Marionnette Museum, on top of the hill in Vieux Lyon. Karl

I also would recommend the Park "Parc de la Tete d'Or".
Metro stop Massena or Brotteux.

There are lions, tigers, elephants, bears, monkeys, crocodiles, zebra ....... the list goes on.

Have fun.

I was there yesterday and the lions and tigers were still there.
The park is still open in winter but just opens later and closes earlier.

Thanks.

Travel Tips for Lyon

Fine Arts Museum

by Fam_Stoica

The former Abbey of the Ladies of Saint Pierre, in the center of Lyon, now houses the Fine Arts Museum. The completely renovated museum houses one of France's largest art collections; with 7,000 sqm of exhibit space, it offers a true retrospective of civilization and illustrates with equal splendor the art of ancient Greece and Egypt, sculpture and painting from the Middle Ages to the present.

Métro de Lyon

by Klod5

L'histoire retiendra 1978 comme l'année du commencement de l'exploitation du métro de Lyon, même si 1974 a vu naître la première ligne (C) du réseau.
Actuellement, il en comprend quatre nommées par des lettres (A, B, C et D).

Even though history will keep 1978 as the year of the beginning of the exploitation of the subway of Lyons, 1974 saw to be born the first line (C).
Currently, he/it understands four named by letters of them (A, B, C and D).

The Fountain and the Statue of Liberty

by alza

The Bartholdi Fountain in Lyon has a very interesting history, linked to the Statue of Liberty in New York City.

In April 1857, the Municipal Council of Bordeaux launched a competition for the creation of a fountain on Place des Quinconces in that city. The sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, 23 years old, won the first prize with his submission of sea-horses mounted by Tritons, by the Titan Ocean and by an allegory of the Rivers Garonne and Dordogne. But the project was not realised.

After Bartholdi created the New York Statue of Liberty in 1886, the Mayor of Bordeaux contacted him again but the fountain project was once more cancelled after much discussion and hesitation. The project was finally realised in 1888 but the fountain was too expensive... It was then presented at the Exposition Universelle de Paris in 1889, and sold to Lyon, where it was erected on the Place des Terreaux in 1892, where it now stands.

The Bartholdi Fountain is classified as Historical Monument since 1995. It weighs 21 tons, made of lead and sustained by an iron framework.

An impressive sight on a beautiful Square in Lyon, where everyone seems to meet and "fraternise". Not to be missed!

Roman ruins

by rcsparty

On the hillside of Fourviere Hill are two Roman ampitheatres built around the time Lundunum (Lyon) was founded in the 1st century BC. The larger one is the oldest one in France and is still in use today. While I wouldn't make a special trip to see these, it is well worth a stop on our walk down from visiting the Basilica.

Lyon

by TygerLyn

"Visiting the daughter!"

My daughter (read her fascinating VT page - Yso) used to live there. Lyon is one of those places that looks really crap as you drive round it but is really interesting once you have penetrated it. Apart from the funicular train and the Cathedral, walk the back streets and look at the old silk workers houses.

Lyon is the home of food in France, the restaurants and bars are unbelievable. You can't eat in all of them no matter how hard you try. Lyon food is not for the squeamish. If you like your burgers well cooked , your steak well done, move on! It is still crawling when it reaches your plate, mate.

It is a vibrant city, full of clubs and bars which a huge mix of nationalities. You will enjoy it.
