Hotel Athena

Good choice for us, friendly and comfortable hotel in a great location, we thought. All public transport just ouside the door - excellent!
A clean and warm en-suite double for us and a good buffet breakfast included in the reasonable price, happy to recommend and to stay here again.

On the way to Lyon

by seoulgirl

We are driving to Lyon from Germany. We want to stop somewhere in between and stay the night. Preferably with a place that has a restaurant, some kind of bed and breakfast or inn with rooms. Somewhere not too far off of A36 around or in Bensancon. With a free place to park. Thanks!

Almost halfway between Besancon and Dole there is a beautiful small castle that operates as B&B. The current rate for a double room is 90 euro.
Here's the webpage:

I 'discovered' it by pure serendipity in 1992, when a friend and I were forced to drive on alternative routes because all the motorways were blocked by truck drivers on strike. At that time there was also a good and non expensive restaurant in the village, but it was long ago. Anyway the castle is still open for business.

Most hotels in Besancon are - understandably - not in the spectacular historic city centre. And those in the centre do often not have their own car park.

If you do not really want to visit Besancon (which is rather fabulous though) you could carry on to southern Alsace (Haut-Rhin), this is only about a 3.5 hours drive from Lyon. First town close to the motorway would be Thann. Can't remember in which hotel I stayed there but there are plenty that fulfill your criteria, like Les Sapins, Hotel du Parc, etc., depending on your budget. Many offer half board which would proably be the best deal.

I recommend you check it out on the Logis de France website, this also always tells you if the hotel has private carpark. In a small place like Thann this is no problem at all:

Travel Tips for Lyon

I live in very special area of Lyon called 'Les pentes de la Croix Rousse'. If you come to Lyon, it's the area that you have to visit.
It's small part of the city which have funny streets called 'traboules'. Lyon is the only city in France with theses kind of street. The traboules are like a sort of labyrinthe: you enter in the front door of a building and you go out by another street.
The traboules were used during the war and save life to many people.

Thonon Les Bain & YvoireThese are two pretty little villages on Lake Geneve. Yvoire is certainly the more picturesque. There are flowers everywhere, in the streets, on balconies and the walls of buildings.

traditional Lyon dishes in a friendly setting

Excellent quality food in a laid back setting. Try the menu (starter + main + dessert) for 18 euros. Also have fondues and other alps specialities as well as Lyon specialities Tablier de Sapeur. You've just got to try it to see

See the Astronomical Clock in the North Transept

by hquittner

In the north transept is the famous clock made in the 14C. This is one of a number of them of this period. It has many automata including a crowing rooster. On the lower levels are various timepieces that record various aspects of earth time before Copernicus.

A Famous Scientist From Lyon

by hquittner

Just to the east of the Basilica St.-Martin in the southern part of the Presqu'ile is a small park containing a statue of a seated gentleman, Andre-Marie Ampere (1775-1836). He is the greatest scientist who has ever been born and grown up in Lyon. His last name is attached to the unit of electrical energy and commonly used. He was a child prodigy.
