During the domination of Roman empire Lyons was a stronghold of Christianity in Gallia. The Christian church was constructed there for the first time in this Roman province. The central arrangement of Lyons, convenient river ways and independent enough municipal status allowed the city to become one of the centers industrial, in particular, silk manufacture, bank activity and trade in the XV century.
Back to the Middle Age for one day in Pérouges
by Bigjones
Pérouges is a typical village of the Middle Age located on top of a hill at about 35km of Lyon. A lot of efforts have been made to preserve its medieval character and all the historic buildings have been restored. It's very charming.

Remember, Lyon is a gastronomic city, so indulge! You can get really, really good food for a reasonable price. I certainly didn't try every restaurant nor can I recommend all those I have but these are the ones where I have had wonderful eating experience. You'll also notice most restaurants in Lyon are quite small- called 'bouchon' The picture below is not the restaurant I am recommending below but it gives you an idea of what one might look like.
Try CHEZ MOUNIER. Excellent restaurant! They serve traditional Lyonnais cuisine. Their ambiance is not five-star but the food compensates for it. This restaurant is very popular among the locals. We went there on a weeknight and was still turned away because it was packed! Try their andouilettes (sausages of cow's intestines) and queunelles.
Massive square in the heart of Lyon
by iNorv9
Formerly known as the Royal Square, la Place Bellecour is located between the Rhone and the Saone rivers in the Presqu'ile district. In the center of this square (one of the largest in all of Europe) is the famous statue of Louis XIV on horseback by Francois Lemot.
Bottom-line: The square itself doesn't have much character, but it is located in a very vibrant part of town, and allows for some nice views of the Fourviere Hill. Also, the official Tourist Office is located here.

SHOPPING! SHOPPING!! SHOPPING!!!
There are many great places to shop here in Lyon... but I was a regular fixture at the shopping center located right downstairs the Credit Lyonnais Tower/ Pullman Part-Dieu Hotel. ;-)) Lots of great boutiques there; the Japanese department store 'Daimaru' has also set up home inside the shopping center! Amazing. What I found really impressive was that the clothes here are much cheaper than those sold in Paris. I mean, I actually managed to buy myself a Chanel-inspired business suit for (get this) - 300FF! Is this cheap or what?? More shopping tips coming up later!
