Day trips from Lyon

by manc_jon

I'm visiting Lyon for a week in September and was hoping to go on a couple of day trips. I'm going to Lyon by train and so will be relying on public transport. I was considering Grenoble and Saint Etienne, are they worth seeing or would you recommend somewhere else?

Thanks,
Jon

Hi Jon, Welcome to VT! You might enjoy visiting Pérouges, 35 kms from Lyon on the road to Geneva. It's an ancient fortified city, filled with archeological and cultural resources, lots of artisans, good food and great wines.
Buses go there from Lyon. Also, I think you can get to Meximieux (1 km fm Pérouges) by train from Lyon.
check out this URL, hope it still works:
www.perouges.org

Lyon itself is very beautiful and interesting to visit too. Have a good time!

hi there
yes, perouges is a nice place to go.
I would suggest you to go to the beaujolais region. This is one of the most famous place for wine.
you can easily access to this region, by local trains.
Go on the www.beaujolais.com website, there are pages in english.
About the price of beers, you can get one 250 ml (typical format in France),for 1.5€. But you can also ask for a pint (500 ml) !!!!!!!!!!
The NINKASI bars brew their own beers.http://www.ninkasi.fr/
They have several bars in the city, small places or larger ones, where they give concerts.

Also go to the "Brasserie Georges". Typical French big brasserie, (it exists since 19th), where you can drink beers, of course, but also eat

Hope you will have a nice weather, and you will enjoy.
Be aware that in Lyon Food and wine are the two most importants things !!!!!!!

cheers

Thanks for the suggestions, Perouges looks nice from the photo's i've just looked at. I've got the Lonely Planet guide to France so will look these places up! Beer prices sound reasonable compared to Lille and Paris!!

Day trips from Lyon

by PhotographerNut

Bonjour!
I'll be spending five and a half days in Lyon, then a week in Paris, in January 2008. I would like to ask a few questions about Lyon. (I'll be on public transport)

1) what's the best way of getting from the airport in Lyon to the city centre?

2) Day trips: I'm planning at least one day trip (Pérouges), and also giving some thought to Chatillon sur Chalaronne, Vienne, Chambéry or Annecy. Given that I have only a few days in the area (I estimate that two or three days will be spent in Lyon), which of those destinations would you recommend for a day trip? (my personal interests are photography, poetry, chess, and history)

Merci beaucoup!

Panorama from Fourviere Hill

The high tower - "a pencil" sticks out in the center of the old city in which there is a central office of known the Lyons credit bank.
It is better to walk on narrow streets of the old city not hurrying up. It is possible to get acquainted with one more sight of Lyons - covered passes between houses which are named “Traboules Lyonnaises”. These passes connect the next streets and remind narrow and twisting passages. Under the legend, in the Middle Ages they were used to carry bales with silk imperceptibly.

Place Bellecour

Located between the Saone and Rhone rivers, this square offers a fantastic view of the Basilica. It was formerly known as the Royal Square and has a statue of Louis XIV on horseback in the center. If you are walking around Lyon, you can't help but stumble upon the square. During some of my morning runs, while getting lost, I always managed to get back to this place eventually. The views of the Basilica as a backdrop to the statue is worth a quick stop for a kodak moment.

One year in the city of light!

by travelinsect

"Open your mind, and let this city seduce you!"

After a few weeks of hard culture shock, and after some intensive French lessons, I learned to love Lyon and its people, and was very very sad to move on at the end of my year there.

A beautiful city, that has flourished over the last decades from an industrial grimy working city, into an artistic and culinary centre.

"City of light"

Watch the sun go down, and just see how this city lights up! Bridges, monuments, buildings
