see the National Opera House....

see the National Opera House. The first five levels are below ground and the six top levels are housed within a vaulted glass superstructure which translates one of the major concepts of the design - transparency.
Lyon has had an Opera House for over three hundred years and, since 1993, the immense new glass structure which crowns the building has become a landmark in the city center, between the Rhône river and City Hall. On the same site as the theaters by Soufflot (1756) and later Chenavard and Pollet (1831), the building now benefits from the very strong architectural signature of Jean Nouvel.

Lyon is accessible by train. The TGV (fast train) from Paris is only two-hour ride. Lyon also has an airport. I find it easier to take the train because it goes straight into the city.
Lyon is quite small - you can go by foot! However, you can get around by bus or the Metro (underground/subway.) The catch is you have to buy the Metro ticket from the vending machine and punch the ticket in the machine yourself to validate the ride. Or you can buy a day pass from the transport office at Bellecour.
Escape from the grayness of the city...
by Natrix
Not that Lyon was a "gray" city, but sometimes I wish there were more green spots. Well, the major, huge green spot in Lyon is the Parc de la Tete d'Or, one of the largest parks of its kind in France with an artificial lake in the middle. When the weather is nice, it's a great place for a picknick, to play Frisbee or just have a sieste in the sun. It's also a great place for kids. There's some animals to see (deer, goats, geese, but also giraffes, elephants and a lion) and a botanical garden, all at free access. Beware, it can get quite crowded at times!
Much like the streets of San Francisco

Take a hike up the steep streets and walkways lined with distinctly tall, colorful and red-roofed buildings. Or you can cheat and take the metro to the Croix Rousse station. Either way, you?ll be rewarded with a nice view of Fourviere Hill to the south.
