Le parc zoologique a été créé en même temps que le parc. C'est le deuxième en France après la ménagerie du jardin des plantes, et le cinquième en Europe. Au début, on ne parlait que d'une ferme à vocation pédagogique, avec quelques animaux sauvages locaux, mais peu à peu, les aménagements se multiplient pour accueillir de nouveaux pensionnaires et le parc se transforme en véritable zoo.Le zoo accueille maintenant des animaux venus du monde entier. Il s'étend sur plus de 6 hectares, et comprend plusieurs centaines d'animaux, dont beaucoup de grands mammifères, certains étant très rares, tels le Lion de l'Atlas, éteint dans la nature depuis les années 1920. Une collaboration scientifique le réunit depuis longtemps à l'Ecole Nationale Vétérinaire de Lyon.
En octobre 2006, le parc a inauguré "La Plaine Africaine", un espace où 130 espèces d?animaux différentes - pour certaines protégées - vont cohabiter en liberté sur 2,5 hectares. Les paysagistes et les architectes ont privilégié la visibilité en fondant les enclos dans le décor. Les animaux réapprennent à vivre ensemble et bénéficient de ce grand espace pour chasser l'ennui.
