where to stay outside Lyon

by extex

We'd like to stay within a 45 min drive of Lyon in a smaller town (prefer a winery, bed and breakfast) in or near a small town. We have 4 days to discover Burgundy and we have a car. We will drive to Lyon for a day, but other areas too. Please recommend!

I just love staying in the Hotel Bourgogne in Cluny. Cluny is a great little town with a very old abbey and this hotel is built right into the ruins of it. From some windows you can see the excavation sites.I've stayed there a couple of times so far and I know I will be back.
I don't know how long of a drive this would be from Lyon, though. The distance is 88 km, probably a bit more than 45 minutes, but less than one hour.

You do of course have many options.

There is a wonderful little hotel called La Reconce not far from Macon (as posted above) that is part of the "Relais du Silence" group. These hotels must meet criteria of being peaceful and offering excellent food. Their prices are also quite affordable.

You can check it out here.

And of course, if you go to Burgundy and Beaune, you must book a table at "Ma cuisine" in Beaune.

Enjoy!

To me Burgundy is all about Gevrey Chambertin and Nuits St Georges and those gorgeous reds. So I would want to stay in the heart of the Cote d'Or within range of Beaune and Dijon. One small Logis in Fixin is remembered with affection. But Fixin is too far away from Lyon I suppose.

Has anyone ever heard of Chateau de Nobles? It's a bed and breakfast in Brancion, near Macon. We may stay there....

Thank you so much. I have been in contact a few times with Chateau de Noble and they do have rooms available during our dates of visit. The location looks great, for the sites we want to visit...also, for bicycling. And the markets of Bruene look fabulous. I will make reservations to stay there, while we tour Burgundy.

(See Pedmar...I took your advice! We'll visit one region, not two!) Thank you. Kathy

Travel Tips for Lyon

Go up to Fourvière (hill)...

by CoFourcade

Go up to Fourvière (hill) where you have a wonderful view over the whole city and, if you're lucky and the weather is good, you'll even see the Alps chain and the Mont Blanc! Reading a book in the courtyard of the Palais Saint Pierre (Museum of Art)

Where to dance salsa in Lyon

by Bigjones about Mi Barrio

There are a few latino places in Lyon but until now, I've only been to Mi-Barrio. It's quite a small place but the atmosphere is really tropical and the music is great (less jazzy than in Brussels, good cuban hits).

Walking the charming streets of Lyon......

by timtrina

As with my tip on Nice, simply leave the hotel and walk - with no plans in mind - just walk around and admire the beautiful architecture, the immaculate parks and have a look at the great shops! This photo was taken at the park at Place Carnot - a wonderful park for families!

Church of St Jean

by keeweechic

The jewel in the crown is without doubt Church of St Jean and its cathedral built between the 12th and 15th century. Many a king came to kneel in the vast nave where the mortal remains of St Louis, who died during the Crusades in 1271, are laid to rest. Construction work began in 1180 but was to last for three centuries which is why the church has ended up with such an interesting mixture of styles.

The large rose window dates from 1392 and the pilasters, sometimes strange, show the holy history.

"Lyon is the French capital of gastronomy"

Many foreigners think Paris is the only capital of French culture. True, ¨Paris is the quintessence of French life and culture.
However, the only true capital of French is Lyon, the second largest French city as some of the best interantional chefs studied gastronomy in Paul Bocuse's institute in Lyon.

"Lyon is the Capital of Gauls"

Lyon was built in 43 BC by the Roman people.
Today, you can visit the remains of the Roman buildings and monuments in the hillside od Fourviere and enjoy the Renaissance streets of Old Lyon.
