HOTEL SEARCH IN CENRE OF LYON

by christine63

I am due to visit Lyon in March 2011 and would like to hear from anyone that has stayed in a popular but reasonable hotel near to the centre of Lyon. Also moving on to Chamonix so if you know of the same type of hotel in that area please also advise

Travel Tips for Lyon

Lyon - divise en deux

by charlottespencer

There are two sides to Lyon - Lyon Part Dieu and Vieux Lyon - divided by the Saone. If you are visiting, Lyon Part Dieu is not the place to go. It's your average smoggy, dull metropolis, and has no charm whatsoever. Conversely, Vieux Lyon (Old Lyon) is beautiful. It may have more tourists, but reasonably so. See my Lyon page (if it has been constructed) to see why. Tasting the most exquisite tomato of my life at the market.

Communist Architecture

by Yso

Lyon has had quite a lot of left wing and communist town councils in the past who have left us with quite an interesting heritage.

Have a look at the main hall of the post office on Place Bellecour - a fantastic mural

Also have a look at the Gratte Ciel area (metro line A - Gratte Ciel), Gratte Ciel means skyscraper in french and these skyscrapers are an interesting architectural diversion!

Cuisine savoyarde

by alza about Nulle Pierre Ailleurs

Good raclettes, fondues and warm saucissons in a traditional, warm and welcoming atmosphere! Rustic setting.
They also make a classic Tartiflette, shavings of oven-cooked potatoes, onions, lard and melted Reblochon cheese, basted with a glass of Apremont Savoy wine... to die for! I know the Tartiflette but didn't have it there that time, it's usually a warming winter dish, and I was there during a warm October... I had an excellent raclette (melted cheese with pickles, sliced small red potatoes, with some cured meats.
When I go back, I'll make sure to have the Tartiflette! love that dish!

Metro ligne D - ride without a driver

by rui_bijie

Ride on metro ligne D and try to catch a seat in the first row. (You will discover marked spots on the floor of the platform - this is where you can access the doors when the train comes in.)
This metro line has no drivers, free sight to the tunnel and the tracks. Nice!

The Basilica On the Hill of Fourviere

by hquittner

Although an oratory had bee placed on top of the hill in the 17C, it took a vow from the Archbishop to the Prussians in 1870, saving the city from destruction, that lead to the erection of the church starting in 1872. It is called neo-Byzantine and is decorated both outside and inside over all surfaces. The west facade has four tall columns and a portico and a set of bronze doors. Above this is a set of caryatids and a fronton like a giant storied tympanum. At least the short towers on each corner of the church are quiet as is the central cross.
