Best Location

by seoulgirl

Hello. We are coming to Lyon for a week in December. Is being near Rue St. Jean a good idea? We would like to be able to walk out to restaurants, bars, a grocery store, and be close to a metro/public transportation. We are renting an apartment. I'm looking at Chambreslyon.com I have a really bad foot and just can't walk long distances.

Thanks!

Anyplace between the Rhone and Saone rivers is very central, with place Bellecour being center. The metro system is very good. Karl

Hi,
Rue St Jean is almost the best choice in Lyon! Bravo!
And if you are at the southern end it is even better! You will be close to the metro and cathedral.
As Pedmar states, Place Bellecour is not far; on Place Bellecour is the Tourist office, and they will give you lots of information, if you are looking for.
At “Vieux Lyon” station is a funicular which leads you to the feet of the Fourviere Basilica, on a hill where you will have a great view over the city. The other funicular (same station) takes you to the Roman ruins and the amphitheatres; a wonderful museum about Roman history is there.
In St Jean area are many restaurants, shops, no worries. And you may also visit some old “traboules”, they are really worth it, if you like architecture.
In general the buses, trams and metro take you about everywhere you may want to go.
I wish your foot will be better Michelle (or Jeff), and you will enjoy Lyon.

Thank you everyone! I am now looking at this address 10 rue des Marronniers. Is this good? I believe so by your posts. I couldn't find what I wanted on Rue St. Jean for various reasons.

What do you know about parking? We won't use the car except maybe a day trip so it doesn't matter where it is parked really. Anything cheap?

Thanks!!!

Michelle

you will crawl all my city!! Rue des Marronniers is a small cobblestoned streets in the "Presqu'ile", between Rhone and Saone rivers. Very famous for restaurants, busy during day time (lunch break especially); close to Place Bellecour and long pedestrian Rue de la Republique (shortened here as "Rue de la Ré")
compared to Rue St Jean, this is more central, but only 1 metro station away on D line
enjoy your stay!

Travel Tips for Lyon

History (cont)

by Kuznetsov_Sergey

Since that time when the city was still called Lugdunum, reached the Roman theatres. Their number includes the most ancient theatre in the territory of France - Odeon. The rests of the district of handicraftsmen are kept. Visiting of these places is better to finish with acquaintance to a underground museum where true treasures are kept: a ceremonial gallic vehicle, Clavdy's tables, mosaics with the image of games in circus, statues, etc.

You Won't Run Out of Eateries

Lyon is renown for having more restaurants per square metre than any other European City. Its gastronomic specialities can be found clustered in the Part-Dieu quarter while in Vieux Lyon, traditional bistros are more the order of the day.

A must see

by hobanma

Take the funicular up to the top...

This is one of the most beautiful churches in the world. I've seen Notre Dame and La Chapelle in Paris, Westminster Abbey, St. Patrick's in Dublin, and they are certainly beautiful but... This is breathtaking inside and out!

Lyon, France's second largest city

by Ipanema_Princess

Lyon is the second largest city of France.
It actually used to be the capital before Paris, at the time of the Roman Empire, hence its nickname of "Capital of Gaul".
Lyon was built between two hills (Fourvière and Saint Jean) and is crossed by two rivers Rhône and Saône).

The city is famous for its gastronomy and silk.

Some famous people from Lyon : the Lumiere Brothers (inventors of the cinema), Antoine de St Exupéry (author of "the Little Prince"), Guignol (old fashion puppet).
